Job description

The underwriter is responsible for short-term insurance policy administration (renewals, endorsements, and new business), providing high-quality service and solutions to Account Executives and clients to ensure business retention and profitable growth. All service provisions will meet the requirements of Treating the Customer Fairly (TCF).

Key Performance Areas:

  • TCF – Treating the Customer Fairly: Ensuring customer confidence, designing products according to customer needs, providing clear information, offering suitable advice, maintaining service standards, and removing post-sale barriers.
  • Performance Management: Setting and reviewing individual objectives aligned with company goals, conducting regular appraisals, and addressing developmental areas.
  • Administration: Completing all processing accurately and on time within a paperless environment.
  • Relationships: Building effective relationships with relevant departments, branches, and third parties.
  • Self-Development: Achieving and maintaining FAIS requirements, staying updated on relevant developments, and working towards continuous self-improvement.
  • Underwriting: Building relationships with clients and Account Executives, providing timely communication, responding to inquiries, educating clients, assisting with risk mitigation, and managing documentation and follow-ups as per procedures.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Supporting projects, maintaining communication updates, accurately handling underwriting duties, obtaining competitive quotations, and reporting suspicious activities.
  • Education / Training: Short-term insurance qualification NQF4 or higher, RE5 certificate, FAIS compliance, insurer product training, class of business training, CPD, proficiency in MS Office.
  • Core Competencies: Excellent communication skills, decision-making ability, underwriting knowledge, and familiarity with insurance systems like Flexi and Cardinal.
  • Experience: Minimum of five years in underwriting, ideally in both Commercial and Personal Lines.
