Job Description

Perform assessment of life insurance applications based on medical, occupation, avocation, travel, and financial information, ensuring adherence to underwriting guidelines.

The role requires assessing life insurance applications, ensuring compliance with underwriting standards.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct tele-interviews or tele-underwriting to assist applicants with completing applications for new policies or changes to existing ones, asking prescribed questions about health and recording responses accurately.
  • Manage medical, occupation, part-time activities, travel, and financial underwriting cases for disability, critical illness, income protection, business cover, group risk, alterations, and queries.
  • Ensure case placement according to reinsurance treaties and internal guidelines.
  • Coordinate with planners and Business Development Managers on special terms, queries, presales, and underwriting refreshers.
  • Resolve underwriting inquiries and cases promptly, participating in training sessions and case studies.
  • Complete documentation accurately and utilize IT systems effectively.
  • Adhere to organizational policies, legislative requirements, and best practices.
  • Assess applications not accepted by online engines, making fair and balanced decisions based on evidence.
  • Approve and countersign cases above acceptance limits.
  • Maintain product knowledge and stay updated on industry regulations and trends.
Candidate Requirements
  • Minimum Grade 12 (NQF Level 4); preferred undergraduate degree.
  • Fit & Proper requirements for long-term insurance category B1 for advice.
  • 3-5 years proven experience as a life insurance underwriter.
  • Knowledge of insurance products, regulations, underwriting guidelines, and current practices.
  • Experience with underwriting systems and tools.
  • Ability to interpret doctors' reports and medical results.
