Transformer Maintenance Technician - Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)

Our client is a leading engineering company providing specialised Electrical, Mechanical, and Instrumentation services to the mining industry in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

As the official agent of Maschinenfabrik Reinhausen (MR) in the region, they deliver high-quality transformer maintenance and tap changer servicing to major mining customers.

As they continue to grow, they are seeking an experienced Transformer Technician to join our team.

Position Overview :

This role involves the execution of transformer maintenance and tap changer services across mining sites in the DRC.

The successful candidate will work on the rotation schedule of 3 months in the Congo (DRC), followed by 2 weeks off, outside of the DRC.

The role demands strong technical expertise, particularly with on-load tap changers (OLTC), and a deep understanding of transformer systems and diagnostics.

Responsibilities :

  1. Conduct preventative and corrective maintenance on power transformers, including inspections, diagnostics, and repairs.
  2. Service and troubleshoot on-load (OLTC) and off-load tap changers, preferably MR systems (e.g. VACUTAP).
  3. Perform advanced diagnostic tests such as DGA, SFRA, insulation resistance, and TTR.
  4. Execute transformer oil sampling, filtration, and degassing processes.
  5. Provide accurate and detailed maintenance, inspection, and test reports.
  6. Coordinate effectively with mine clients and internal technical teams.
  7. Support transformer installation, testing, and commissioning activities.
  8. Comply with mine site safety rules and company procedures.
  9. Participate in continuous training on MR technologies and transformer best practices.

Knowledge and Skills :

  1. Strong ability to interpret technical manuals and electrical drawings.
  2. Excellent troubleshooting and field problem-solving skills.
  3. Able and willing to work on a rotational basis (3 months in DRC, 2 weeks off).
  4. Good communication skills in English and/or French (both is an advantage).
  5. Valid passport and international travel readiness.
  6. Driver's license is an asset.
  7. Familiarity with transformer testing equipment.
  8. Experience with transformer protection systems and auxiliary controls.
  9. Knowledge of IEC/IEEE transformer maintenance standards.
  10. Prior experience working on mine sites or remote industrial environments.

Qualifications and Experience :

  1. Education: Diploma or Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent technical field.
  2. Experience: Minimum 10 years hands-on experience in transformer maintenance, including extensive work on tap changers.
  3. Proven expertise in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining OLTC and DETC systems.
  4. Experience with MR tap changers and diagnostic tools is highly desirable.

Remuneration :

R 20, – R30, per month Structured benefits = pension and medical Flights, accommodation, sustenance, and transport whilst on rotation in DRC.
