Job description

A Senior Associate / Associate position has become available at Adams & Adams (Sandton branch) within a dynamic team managing a holistic Intellectual Property law practice, specializing in trade mark, copyright, commercial IP, and entertainment law matters.

The suitable candidate would be an admitted attorney, ideally qualified as a Trade Marks Practitioner with the South African Institute of Intellectual Property Law (SAIIPL), and have three to five years post-qualification experience working in an Intellectual Property law firm. A passion for IP law, including trade marks, an interest in IP commercialization matters, and matters relating to the creative and entertainment industries, along with a drive for continued learning and growth within a team of like-minded professionals, are essential qualities we seek.

Key duties include, but are not limited to:

  1. Reviewing trade mark portfolios and making strategic recommendations.
  2. Assisting in trade mark filing strategies and due diligence.
  3. Preparing legal advice and opinions related to trade marks.
  4. Managing and coordinating major trade mark clearance and filing projects globally.
  5. Providing opinions, reports, and quotes on the registrability of trade marks worldwide, including regulatory and copyright considerations.
  6. Drafting correspondence, including responses to client enquiries and routine communications.
  7. Preparing and filing trade mark applications, managing registration, and post-registration renewals.
  8. Managing schedules and diaries effectively.
  9. Handling urgent matters and client requests promptly.
  10. Preparing reports and schedules.
  11. Managing and developing multi-client portfolios and executing portfolio transfers.
  12. Reporting official actions and ensuring compliance.
  13. Addressing classification queries.
  14. Updating client instructions and records.
  15. Conducting research relevant to IP law.
  16. Creating marketing materials, including articles for publication.
  17. Performing client visits.
  18. Applying knowledge of commercial IP, including license agreements.
  19. Building client relationships and attracting new clients.
