Job summary

Communicate Finance is seeking a Toolroom Lead to supervise all Toolroom operations, ensuring maximum mould availability and high uptime in a high-volume plastics environment.

You will manage preventative maintenance, fault finding, and repairs on moulds, coordinate installations, and drive improvements in reliability and efficiency while mentoring Toolmakers and junior staff.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 years' experience maintaining plastic injection moulds in a manufacturing environment.
  • At least 5 years' experience leading or supervising a Toolroom team.
  • Strong hands-on mould fault-finding, repair, servicing, and preventative maintenance experience.
  • Experience improving mould reliability and reducing production downtime.
  • Knowledge of plastic injection moulding processes and tooling best practices.
  • Experience with maintenance planning systems, quality standards, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Strong leadership, planning, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a high-volume manufacturing environment and support production outside normal hours when required.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise all Toolroom operations to ensure maximum mould availability and production uptime.
  • Manage preventative maintenance, servicing, fault finding, and repairs on plastic injection moulds.
  • Identify recurring mould issues and implement long-term engineering improvements.
  • Coordinate new mould installations, modifications, and commissioning activities.
  • Plan and allocate work to Toolroom staff while monitoring productivity and quality.
  • Review mould condition and recommend refurbishment or replacement where required.
  • Liaise with suppliers and external contractors regarding tooling repairs and procurement.
  • Ensure tooling spares are available and effectively managed.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, job cards, and documentation.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives across tooling performance, reliability, and manufacturing processes.
  • Promote compliance with quality, safety, and maintenance management systems.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop Toolmakers and junior maintenance personnel.

Qualifications
  • Matric (Grade 12)
  • Trade Tested Toolmaker with N3 qualification
  • Additional training in maintenance management, lean manufacturing, or continuous improvement will be advantageous
