Role Overview
As a TMM Foreman, you will be responsible for the effective supervision of workshop operations, ensuring the safe, efficient, and high-quality maintenance of all trackless mobile machinery (TMM), both underground and on surface. You will play a pivotal role in leading a multidisciplinary team, managing workshop resources, and upholding the highest standards of safety and compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise, mentor, and coordinate a team of mechanics, artisans, and technicians in the installation, maintenance, and repair of TMM equipment, including but not limited to FERMEL, Magni Telehandlers, Manitou Telehandlers, CAT Skidsteers, and BOOYCO systems.
- Oversee daily workshop activities, including scheduling, task allocation, and performance management to ensure operational targets are met.
- Develop and implement robust workshop reporting and documentation processes, ensuring all maintenance records, work orders, and inspection reports are accurate and up to date.
- Manage inventory, spares, and consumables, and coordinate procurement to minimize downtime and ensure workshop readiness.
- Review, coordinate, and monitor maintenance contracts with third-party service providers, ensuring service level agreements are met and cost efficiencies are achieved.
- Lead the execution of preventative and predictive maintenance plans, utilizing your expertise in hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and TMM diagnostics.
- Ensure strict compliance with mine health and safety regulations, conducting regular risk assessments, toolbox talks, and incident investigations as required.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the workshop, identifying opportunities for process optimization, cost savings, and skills development.
- Foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, and professional growth among workshop staff, providing training and technical support as needed.
- Liaise with mine management, engineering, and production teams to align maintenance activities with operational priorities and project timelines.
Required Experience and Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years’ hands-on experience in the maintenance, fault-finding, and repair of trackless mining equipment, with at least 5 years in a supervisory or foreman capacity within a mining workshop environment.
- Valid Trade Certificate (Section 13 or Section 26(d)) with statement of results. (Section 13 does not require a statement of results.)
- Proven experience in workshop administration, including work permit and work order management, inventory control, and contract oversight.
- Strong technical knowledge of hydraulic systems, TMM diagnostics, and maintenance planning.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite for reporting and administration.
- Valid South African driver’s license.
- Must pass a mine DOVER test and obtain a valid underground medical examination and HTS result.
Preferred Skills and Exposure
- Experience with a wide range of TMM equipment and OEM systems (FERMEL, Magni, Manitou, CAT, BOOYCO).
- Existing TMM equipment licenses and certifications.
- Formal training in supervision, management, or leadership.
- Demonstrated ability to lead diverse teams in high-pressure, production-driven mining environments.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, with a track record of implementing effective maintenance strategies.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with all levels of the organization and external contractors.
- Exposure to underground mining operations and a comprehensive understanding of the mining industry's regulatory and safety landscape.
