Job summary

Samancor Chrome Ltd. in South Africa is seeking a furnace operator assistant to safely load mix and stoke/rabble a furnace between taps. The role involves driving the Dango car and supporting the Furnace Operator with ad hoc tasks.

The position requires adherence to SHEQ standards, monitoring furnace conditions, and maintaining housekeeping around the furnace while collaborating with the control room team.

Qualifications

• Identify and assess risk exposures within area of responsibility.
• Apply mitigation and control measures for residual risks.
• Participate in and comply with SHEQ requirements.
• Utilise the IMS to initiate and report SHEQ status.

Responsibilities

• Monitor furnace bed/mix level to maintain desired operating conditions.
• Control proportions of raw materials for the smelting process.
• Conduct water leak inspections in the furnace and report on MES.
• Prepare the furnace bed for maintenance and assist where needed.
• Assist Furnace Operator with activities in the control room.
• Relieve or act on Furnace Operator when required.
• Fulfil tapping responsibilities when necessary.
• Ensure proper housekeeping around the furnace.
• Update Furnace log sheets and the MES system.
• Report safety hazards immediately to the Furnace and Supervisor.

• Identify and assess level of continuous risk exposures in area of responsibility by considering exposures to people, equipment, material, environment, processes, etc.
• Consider the level of risk, apply mitigation and implement control measures for residual risk
• Participate and comply with SHEQ requirements (SHEQ Toolbox)
• Utilise the Integrated Management System (IMS) to initiate and report SHEQ status
