An exciting opportunity exists for a Technologist at NATIONAL BRANDS LIMITED (NBL) Rosslyn, Snackworks. The purpose of the role is to participate in all key activities of the Technical department from Continuous Improvement (CI), raw material testing, product evaluation and New Product Development (NPD); to lead specific projects in any of the areas mentioned above and to actively support the growth of the Technical department expertise and knowledge in Food Science and Technology.

Key Performance Areas

  • Manufacturing Support and Continuous Improvement
  • Actively support manufacturing in troubleshooting
  • Participate in customer complaints and investigations on product issues
  • Participate in optimisation projects run by factory
  • Participate in validation and verification of processes and operating procedures
  • Basic to intermediary knowledge of snacks manufacturing process
    • Potato chips processing
    • Tortilla chips processing
    • Soft and hard extrudes processing
  • Provide technical support and training
  • Procurement related activities
  • Carry out raw material analysis (lab testing)
  • Related product trial and analysis
  • Conduct sensory test and analyse data
  • Review raw materials, product and process specifications
  • New Product Development (NPD) and Research and Development Project
  • Liaising with suppliers for new raw material requirements, maintaining regulatory, Kosher and Halal standards
  • Produce concept samples for briefed projects by working with the Snacks Specialist
  • Testing and analyses of prototypes
  • Running the NPD process from inception to launch: running factory trials, first production supports up to post-launch review
  • Conduct literature surveys on process, ingredients and regulatory aspects for the purpose of developing or optimizing analytical methods, processes, and products
  • Produce (formalise) process instructions
  • Support with reviewing packaging material in preparation for print in accordance to regulatory requirements
  • Develop product and process assessment methods
  • Update/create process specifications
  • Department management
  • Participate in Capex preparation and commissioning
  • Participate in Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and HACCP initiatives
  • Initiate process and product change requests (workflow)
  • Participate in SHE initiatives
Minimum Requirements

Experience:

  • 3-years experience in a similar food processing environment

Qualifications

  • BSc in Food Sciences and Technology
  • MSc in Food Science and Technology is an advantage

Additional Requirements

  • Working knowledge of:
    • Food Science or Food Technology
    • Food processing, product testing and sensory science
  • Data analysis, statistics and report writing
  • Acts and regulations pertaining to food product manufacturing
