Job Purpose

Provide technical support for the department’s clinic and ophthalmic laboratory operations, including operating, monitoring, and facilitating regular maintenance of ophthalmic equipment; recordkeeping and reporting of matters relating to operations in the department’s clinic and ophthalmic laboratories; monitoring and procurement of stock and consumables, and Safety, Health, and Environmental compliance.

Technical/academic support for the teaching and learning activities in the department by preparing and assisting with practicals, supervising students in the clinic and ophthalmic laboratory, as well as providing support during community engagement outreach activities.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • A National Diploma in Optical Dispensing or equivalent SAQA-accredited international qualification. A higher qualification in Optical Dispensing would be an advantage.
  • Current registration with the HPCSA as a Dispensing Optician: Independent Practice.
  • At least 2 years’ experience in laboratory operations and quality control within an ophthalmic environment.

  • Facilitation of equipment maintenance, repairs, and procurement.
  • Safety management and representation on Safety Committees.
  • Continuing Professional Development.
  • Contribute towards Quality Management in the Department.
  • Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills
  • Ability to communicate with all stakeholders, including students, colleagues, and industry
  • Excellent organisational and planning skills
  • Ability to work systematically and maintain a well-ordered laboratory/clinic area
  • Proficient in MS Office 365
