Job summary

SGS is looking for a Technician in Orkney, South Africa. The ideal candidate will ensure high-quality instrumentation analysis and validation while adhering to safety protocols. The role requires operational experience in SANAS 17025 accredited facilities, proficiency in LIMS, and at least three years of relevant experience. Candidates must have a Matriculation diploma with Mathematics and Science, and be equipped with strong interpersonal skills, integrity, and flexibility for shifts and overtime. Qualifications

  • Operational experience in a SANAS 17025 accredited facility.
  • LIMS administration and operation experience.
  • Experience in instrumentation, data collection, and reporting.
  • At least 3 years’ experience required.

Responsibilities

  • Record, evaluate, and validate instrumentation data.
  • Complete tasks within allocated time and plan work for operators.
  • Perform routine and non-routine analytical operations as required.
  • Ensure adherence to turnaround time for analyses.
  • Assist in validation of new methods under senior guidance.
  • Adhere to quality protocols for accreditation.
  • Maintain housekeeping and laboratory quality management.
  • Document repairs, maintenance, and calibration of instruments.
  • Ensure correct consumables and chemicals are used.
  • Work in other areas if requested.
  • Comply with safety and quality requirements.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

To outline the responsibilities and authorities the Technician has in relation to post requirements of managerial, technical, and key support personnel.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Must be able to record, evaluate, and validate instrumentation for specific job(LECO, ICP, XRF, AAS & Wet Chem) data
  • Completes tasks within the allocated time and plans work for operators to ensure that overall service goals of the laboratory are met.
  • Responsibility to perform routine and non‑routine analytical operations on specific instrumentation (LECO, ICP, XRF, AAS & Wet Chem) if and as required.
  • Responsibility to ensure turnaround time is adhered to at all times, for work specified about instrumentation analysis.
  • Responsibility to perform all analyses.
  • Responsibility, under the guidance of instrumentation seniors, to assist in the work required to validate any new methods or modifications made for analysis.
  • Responsibility to bring all problems (technical and managerial) to the attention of the seniors
  • Responsibility to adhere to quality protocols required for accreditation of instrumentation and chemical analysis.
  • Responsibility to adhere to all quality, health, and safety rules and regulations.
  • Responsibility to ensure that the housekeeping for the general working area is kept up to standard.
  • Complies and conforms to Laboratory Quality Management System (ISO17025)
  • Responsibility to record any day‑to‑day repairs, maintenance, calibration, and verification of instruments performed.
  • Responsibility to ensure correct consumables and chemicals are used for instrumentation chemical analysis.
  • Responsibility to work in other areas of the instrumentation laboratory, Analytical Services, and/or Divisions if asked to do so.
  • Adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
  • Perform any other reasonable tasks as assigned by the direct line manager.

Education

Matriculation, with Mathematics and Science

Experience

  • Operational experience in a SANAS 17025 accredited facility
  • LIMS administration and operation
  • Experience in instrumentation, data collection, and reporting
  • At least 3 years’ experience

  • Initiate a formal improvement request when a deviation of the system occurs, possible improvements are identified, or when nonconformity is identified.
