Job Description
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Outline the responsibilities and authorities of the Technician concerning post requirements for managerial, technical, and key support personnel.
Specific Responsibilities
- Record, evaluate, and validate instrumentation data for specific jobs (LECO, XRD, XRF, OES & Wet Chem).
- Complete tasks within allocated timeframes and plan work for operators to meet overall laboratory service goals.
- Perform routine and non-routine analytical operations on specific instrumentation as required.
- Ensure turnaround times are consistently adhered to for analysis work.
- Conduct all analyses accurately.
- Assist in validating new methods or modifications under the guidance of senior instrumentation staff.
- Report technical and managerial problems to senior staff.
- Adhere to quality protocols required for accreditation of instrumentation chemical analysis.
- Follow all quality, health, and safety regulations.
- Maintain housekeeping standards in the working area.
- Conform to Laboratory Quality Management System (ISO17025).
- Record repairs, maintenance, calibration, and verification activities for instruments.
- Use correct consumables and chemicals for analysis.
- Work in other areas of the laboratory or divisions as needed.
- Follow all SGS quality and safety policies.
- Perform other tasks as assigned by the line manager.
COMPLIANCE & AUTHORITY
- Cease use of equipment that may pose safety hazards or enter hazardous environments without proper knowledge and protection, reporting any issues to higher authorities.
- Stop work that may compromise service quality and report to higher authorities.
- Initiate formal improvement requests when deviations, potential improvements, or nonconformities are identified.
Qualifications
Education
- Matriculation with Mathematics and Science subjects.
- B.Sc. degree or relevant diploma in Analytical Chemistry.
Experience
- Operational experience in a SANAS 17025 accredited facility.
- Experience with LIMS administration and operation.
- Experience in instrumentation, data collection, and reporting.
- Minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience.
Required Skills
- Proficient in LIMS use.
- Ability to troubleshoot instruments and methods.
- Knowledge of verifying calibration standards, quality control standards, verification standards, and Certified Reference Materials (CRM).
- Practice Good Laboratory Practice.
- Assist Chemists with SANAS audits and laboratory documentation.
