Job description

Technical Support Engineer @ Formula D_ – Cape Town

Come troubleshoot the future with us.

Hey tech whisperer, we see you! Are you the one who finds joy in solving puzzles, unravelling bugs, and making tech sing in harmony? Do you get a kick out of making things just work—especially when they’re quirky, custom, and maybe built into an animatronic dinosaur or a VR coral reef?

If that’s a definite “yes!," then read on. We’re formula D_, a global experiential design studio that’s all about creating experiences that educate, excite, and make the world better (seriously—we design with the UN Sustainable Development Goals in mind).

The Role: Technical Support Engineer

This is not your average IT gig. You’ll be supporting software and hardware in immersive exhibits around the world—from underwater experiences to high-tech science galleries. Think: hands-on, multi-sensory, sometimes experimental installations where things need to run smoothly for real people in real time.

What You'll Do:

  • Keep things running: Diagnose and resolve crashes, glitches, and gremlins in live installations.
  • Play the middle person: Bridge the gap between our dev teams, media makers, and clients.
  • Test like a beast: Validate Unity-based software, hardware setups, network connections, AV gear—you name it.
  • Support like a pro: Manage support tickets, create a knowledge base, and sometimes be on-site for the big fix.
  • Tinker & experiment: Help test out wild new tech, from tracking sensors to interactive projection mapping.

What You Bring:

  • A solid grip on Windows systems, networks (hello, IPs and firewalls), and GitHub workflows.
  • Bonus points if you’ve dabbled in Unity, media servers, or played around with AV and sensor tech.
  • Sherlock-level troubleshooting skills and the ability to explain geeky stuff in human language.
  • A love of learning, curiosity, and a calm head under pressure.

What’s In It for You?

  • Work with an international team of creatives and technologists doing meaningful, mission-driven work.
  • Get your hands on some of the most exciting interactive installations out there.
  • Be part of a company that mixes purpose, innovation, and good vibes—where we believe fun is part of the formula.
  • Located in our buzzing Cape Town studio (Woodstock Exchange), with the flexibility and culture to grow.

Why Formula D_?

Because we design experiences that matter. Our projects are playful, thought-provoking, and globally impactful. And we believe tech is at its best when it helps people connect—with stories, with places, with purpose.
