The Tech Lead operates across multiple squads within Corporate Banking Digital, providing technical leadership that ensures consistency, quality, and alignment of engineering practices across the business unit. This role is responsible for overseeing engineering efforts across the team, driving technical initiatives, exploring new technologies, and fostering a culture of excellence.
In the context of a channel-focused engineering environment, the role ensures cohesive, end-to-end solutions across front-end user experiences, backend services, and integration layers, with a strong focus on delivering performant, reliable, and seamless client-facing digital experiences. The role also supports alignment between front-end and backend engineering approaches to enable scalable and maintainable solutions.
The role also focuses on enhancing engineering practices in line with the Group Engineering strategy, ensuring teams are continuously improving and delivering high-quality, resilient solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive Modern Software Delivery Practices
- Drive and embed up-to-date engineering methods, tools, and mindsets across the team and, where relevant, across the division.
- Establish non-negotiable engineering standards that align with the group's strategic objectives.
- Ensure alignment and consistency of engineering practices across squads, reducing duplication and increasing reuse of proven solutions.
- Elevate Developer Experience and Efficiency
- Continuously refine processes and environments to help teams deliver high-quality software faster.
- Identify and remove impediments that slow down or hinder software delivery teams.
- Promote shared tooling, frameworks, and practices that improve developer experience across squads.
- Foster a Learning Culture and Mentor Talent
- Provide guidance, coaching, and technical leadership to engineers within the division.
- Encourage knowledge sharing within and across business units, ensuring best practices circulate freely.
- Own Business Outcomes Through Technology
- Align engineering efforts with business objectives so that technical innovation has a clear, measurable impact.
- Collaborate with Heads of, Group Engineering Leads, architects, GRC, InfoSec, analysts, product owners, and other stakeholders to ensure group-wide cohesion.
- Work with the team and architects to design physical architecture for the area's Technical Platforms.
- Translate Group Engineering strategy and objectives into actionable engineering plans, milestones, and measurable outcomes, and track progress against these.
- Promote Security, Risk Management, and Compliance
- Integrate security and risk awareness into all stages of software delivery.
- Ensure teams follow robust governance practices and meet regulatory requirements.
- Drive Platform Performance and Operational Excellence
- Ensure systems are designed and operated with strong performance, scalability, and reliability characteristics.
- Promote practices that improve observability, resilience, and operational readiness across platforms.
- Support teams in identifying and addressing systemic risks, performance bottlenecks, and operational inefficiencies.
- Represent and Amplify Engineering @ Investec Externally
- Encourage and drive open-source contributions where appropriate, showcasing the group's technical excellence.
- Support teams (and yourself) in writing about (e.g. blogging) or speaking at conferences and sharing experiences, elevating both Investec's brand and the individual engineers' profiles.
- Collaborate to Scale Impact
- Build effective relationships with other tech leads, engineering leads, architects, product owners, and business leaders to coordinate efforts.
- Leverage the “One Investec” ideal to unify standards and approaches, reducing duplication of effort.

- Continuously assess and refine engineering processes, tools, and metrics.

Experience Required
- Technical Experience Required:
- Proven engineering expertise
- Familiarity with modern engineering practices and data store design[MT1.1][RR1.2]
- Experience with Continuous Delivery, CI/CD pipelines, Azure, and Azure DevOps
- Strong grounding in at least one modern engineering stack (e.g. C#, React, Angular
- Nice to have: Working knowledge of Azure, containerisation, and container orchestration (like Kubernetes)
- Proficiency in using AI-enabled productivity tools, such as Copilot, to improve efficiency, generate insight and support decision-making. Applies critical thinking and sound judgement when interpreting outputs, remains accountable for the quality and accuracy of their work
