Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Technical Co-ordinator to join the Western Cape Team. This permanent position is ideally located in the Citrusdal area.

Key Responsibilities :

  1. Assist the Program Manager in delivering technical support for the SIT program, including pest monitoring services (False Codling Moth, Fruit Fly, Bactrocera Dorsalis, Carob Moth) on a weekly basis through orchard visits and data analytics.
  2. Assist with all technical requests in the Olifants River Valley (Citrusdal), Hex River Valley (De Doorns), NUY Valley, and Orange River Valley (Kakamas) regarding pest activity in citrus orchards and table grape vineyards.
  3. Liaise with the Program Manager to ensure timely orchard visits and reports.
  4. Visit orchards with high pest activity, identify possible causes, and prepare scientific reports with recommendations. Follow-up visits will be required.
  5. Oversee field-based flight tests for the SIT program to ensure proper conduct.
  6. Monitor pest flight peaks, mainly FCM, to determine timing for alternative measures.
  7. Assist with new season customer sign-ups and onboarding.
  8. Engage in weekly customer interactions as needed or directed by the Program Manager.
  9. Assist the Area Co-ordinator with managing field traps and monitoring data stations weekly.
  10. Monitor qualitative and quantitative aspects of sterile FCM releases, including flight ability and quality checks, and assist with corrective actions.
  11. Participate in internal meetings and presentations as required.
  12. Manage distribution of moths from the production facility, ensuring quality, age, and ratios meet standards.
  13. Manage ratios across areas and advise relevant managers.
  14. Maintain and update program-related information for operational purposes.
  15. Coordinate with various departments to standardize protocols and information nationally.

Requirements

  • Degree in Entomology or a similar field (BSc, Hons).
  • Knowledge of pest management products, IPM systems, and implementation in citrus will be preferred.
  • Good understanding of insect biology and ecology in agro-ecosystems.
  • Proficient in computer skills, report writing, and data analysis (Microsoft Office suite).
  • Valid driver’s license; travel will be required.
