Job description

Key Output

  1. Technical Expert in testing and troubleshooting of Caterpillar components.
  2. Perform Dynamometer and Test bench performance tests on components to ensure they meet Caterpillar specifications.
  3. Testing, troubleshooting, and repair of Caterpillar components.
  4. Prepare tested components for paint and dispatch.
  5. Perform failure root cause analysis.
  6. Diagnose CAT systems quickly and efficiently, carrying out repairs.
  7. Compile accurate component analysis reports and address all technical issues identified.
  8. Control and maintain test equipment.
  9. Compile accurate customer machine analysis and reports, including Engine Inspection Reports (MIRs) and Technical Analysis Reports (TAs).
  10. Perform planned and breakdown repairs (disassemble, inspect, assemble, and test) of Caterpillar Earthmoving components to OEM standards and customer requirements.
  11. Ensure reusability of parts during inspection.
  12. Comply with company contamination control standards.
  13. Follow safe work practices.
  14. Manage own administration (labour booking, service reports, part returns, expenses, etc.).
  15. Maintain quality and productivity standards of work consistently and accurately (ISO Standards).
  16. Comply with OEM and supplier warranty systems, policies, and procedures.

Qualification, Experience, and Competencies

  1. Qualified in relevant trade (e.g., Diesel Mechanic / Earthmoving Equipment Mechanic) NQF 3.
  2. Minimum 5 years post-qualification experience on earthmoving machines (at least 4 years on Caterpillar).
  3. Minimum of 5 years of earthmoving equipment component rebuild, analysis, and testing (including 3 years on Caterpillar equipment).
  4. Minimum 2 years’ experience on Dynamometers and Hydraulic/Transmission test benches.
  5. Applicable fundamental product knowledge (Caterpillar).
  6. Caterpillar machine-specific technical knowledge and skills (Certification is an advantage).
  7. Technical expertise in testing and troubleshooting Caterpillar components.
  8. Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  9. Good technical report writing skills.
  10. Proficient in computer literacy (SIS, STW, ET) and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams).
  11. Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  12. Basic understanding of finance and business.
  13. Problem-solving, analysis skills, and customer relationship management.
  14. Strong understanding of OEM and supplier warranty systems, policies, and procedures.
