An Aboriginal community organization is seeking a Team Leader for the Uti Kulintjaku Women's Team in Alice Springs. This role involves providing cultural and strategic leadership in mental health initiatives driven by Anangu knowledge systems. Ideal candidates will possess qualifications in mental health and a deep understanding of Aboriginal culture. Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (NPY) Women's Council was founded and is still led, governed and directed by women from the NPY region. It was created to give a voice to women across 26 desert communities in Western Australia, South Australia, and the Northern Territory. Today, we continue to provide progressive, innovative and evidence-based work in service delivery, advocacy and support. At its core, NPY Women's Council is about family and community – walytja. Our purpose is to work with women, children, and their families of the Ngaanyatjarra, Pitjantjatjara, and Yankunytjatjara regions in central Australia. Our role is to work side by side and help increase their capacity to lead safe and healthy lives with improved life choices.
The Ngangkari Program supports Ngangkari (traditional healers of Central Australia) to continue their work in communities, clinics, and hospitals, promoting and strengthening emotional and mental health and well-being. Uti Kulintjaku is an award-winning initiative of the Ngangkari Program that supports mental health understanding. Led by ngangkari and senior Anangu, Uti Kulintjaku encourages deeper conversations about mental health and healing for Anangu and people working in Aboriginal health and related services. This project involves Senior Anangu across WA, NT, and SA, bringing together Ngangkari, mental health practitioners, NPY Women's Council, and senior Anangu women with specific language and literacy skills from local communities.
The Team Leader provides cultural, operational, and strategic leadership for the Uti Kulintjaku Women's Team. This role ensures the effective delivery of community-led mental health and wellbeing initiatives, grounded in Anangu knowledge systems and cultural practices. The Team Leader supports Anangu women in leadership, project development, and healing-focused work across the NPY region.
You will have qualifications and experience in relevant mental health or wellbeing fields with a strong understanding of Aboriginal culture and experience working respectfully with Aboriginal people. This is a unique chance to work for an organization that takes a grassroots approach to community development. You will work closely alongside Anangu families and communities, experiencing the landscape and part of the world.
