Job Description

Purpose: Manages several underwriting professionals. Reviews and ensures conformance with underwriting policies, guidelines, and procedures by subordinate underwriters. Recommends changes in underwriting policies and procedures. Underwrites large or complex risks or provides final approval for those underwritten by subordinates.

Responsibilities:

  1. Underwriting Insurance Cases
    Review and underwrite assigned new business and renewal cases within prescribed authority levels, escalating unusual or complex cases to senior colleagues where appropriate.
  2. Underwriting Automation
    Carry out research and analysis to support the development, testing, and improvement of automated underwriting processes and systems; recommend functionalities or improvements that reduce costs and enhance effectiveness.
  3. Organizational Risk Management
    Use risk management systems to prevent undue risks, achieving specific goals within designated business areas.
  4. Regulatory and Compliance Management
    Investigate incidents and reports, provide expert advice, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards by collaborating with internal functions.
  5. Leadership and Direction
    Communicate the local action plan, align it with organizational strategy, motivate team members to achieve business goals.
  6. Performance Management
    Set and monitor performance objectives, use performance systems to improve, and ensure team accountability.
  7. Budgeting
    Create and analyze budgets for organizational areas.
  8. Document Preparation
    Edit and prepare documents for publication following organizational style guidelines.
  9. Financial Policies, Guidelines, and Protocols
    Develop and implement financial guidelines to ensure regulatory compliance and good financial practice.
  10. Organizational Capability Building
    Identify team development needs, plan actions, and provide training or coaching to enhance performance.

Requirements (Experience & Skills):

  • Matric or equivalent
  • Postgraduate degree or equivalent
  • 3-5 years' experience in the Insurance Industry
  • Proficiency in MS Excel and PowerPoint
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Accounting qualification or experience is a plus
