Job description

Cape Town Torah High is an Independent International High School, registered with the WCED, situated in Gardens, Cape Town. We require a dynamic teacher to join our team in July 2025 who is fully qualified to teach in a South African High School and is registered with SACE. We are looking for someone who has had experience teaching English, Science and/or Maths (not necessarily all three) to Grades 7-9 or higher.

Aim of the school

Our school is cutting edge in that we prescribe to a personalised, self-directed educational philosophy. We keep our classes small and personalise each student’s educational trajectory. We encourage our students to be self-motivated, self-starters who ask, explore and understand, and we believe that this approach to education ensures our students learn at their own pace, are positioned at their ability level, and in so doing ensure that they do not fall behind due to conceptual/knowledge gaps but rather achieve their own personal best across all subjects.

As one of a small team of teachers, the successful candidate will need to fulfil the role of teacher/mentor to students, teaching primarily through one-on-one interaction in their fi eld of expertise, as well as in other subject areas as needed to support the school’s timetable. Due to the nature of independent learning, the successful candidate needs to be competent in the administration and management of the students’ projected schedule and progress, keeping them accountable to an acceptable pace and level of achievement. Furthermore, we look for a teacher who brings excitement and a love of learning to the classroom, as well as leadership, with teaching that supports our philosophy.

Responsibilities

Middle School
Grade 7 – 9 Maths and Science courses are created by external course providers, while English courses are created in-house.

Teaching for these grades involves:

  • Gaining mastery in all the English subject matter across grade levels 7-9 by watching the course videos, working through course materials and making connections between Middle School and High School English curriculum.
  • Gaining mastery in all the Maths subject matter across grade levels 7-9 by watching the course videos, working through course materials and making connections between Middle School and High School Maths curriculum.
  • Gaining mastery in all the Science subject matter across grade levels 7-9 by watching the course videos, working through course materials and making connections between Middle School and High School Science curriculum.
  • Teaching subject coursework to single grade level groups or multi-grade level groups.
  • Teaching subject coursework on a one-on-one basis at student-specificability levels.
  • Managing students’ weekly deadlines to ensure they cover the coursework within the allotted time per term.
  • Marking and recording all work timeously within 24 hours.
  • Remediating and extending students as needed.
  • Finding and creating resources for Maths and Science to assist students in their learning.
  • Conducting weekly Science experiments with each student.

Additional responsibilities

  • Teaching at least one other subject, such as PE, EMS or an elective.
  • On campus during school hours: 08:00 to 16:00.
  • Daily update of the markbook.
  • Attend daily staff meetings.
  • Attend termly parent-teacher meetings.
  • Arrange outings for students relating to curricular requirements.
  • Attend/lead at least one extramural activity per week.

Candidate Requirements

  • Experience teaching English, Science and/or Maths (not necessarily all three).
  • An acceptance and willingness to become better acquainted with the Jewish values and practices that characterise our school.
  • Self-motivation, with a sound work ethic, initiative and high levels of energy.
  • Inherent professionalism and the ability to work with the team of teachers.
  • Time and stress management, imparting this to students.
  • Strong organisational skills, being adaptable and able to multitask.
  • Excellent communication skills, as well as being student and parent oriented.
  • An ability to inspire, comfort and build self-esteem.
  • An ability to listen and respond to management, staff , students and parents.
  • Excellent computer skills, across a variety of devices and programmes including sound knowledge of Google Suite.
