JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Tax Compliance Supervisor

Department: Tax Department

Reports to: Tax Manager and/or Tax Director

Short Summary of the role:

Assist in supervising the tax department staff, advise on tax compliance issues, research tax information, process queries, liaise with SARS, and manage work flow to ensure quality outputs related to audits, tax returns, objections, appeals, and disputes.

Academic Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 with accounting subject
  • Tax or relevant qualifications with at least 5 years of experience in a tax environment
  • Registered Tax Practitioner or eligible for registration

Skills and Experience:

  • Interpersonal and numeric skills
  • Ability to interpret tax laws (Income Tax Act, Tax Administration Act, VAT Act)
  • Meticulous work ethic with minimal supervision
  • Proven liaising experience with SARS, including SARS appointments
  • Strong knowledge of tax compliance processes and law interpretation

Computer Packages:

  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • GreatSoft
  • SARS E-Filing
  • LexisNexis (advantageous)

Key Duties:

  • Supervise tax staff and assist with complex tax return completion
  • Manage provisional tax administration and deadlines
  • Oversee dispute resolution processes including objections and appeals
  • Consult and advise clients on basic tax queries
  • Prepare and review complex tax calculations and returns
  • Handle SARS response letters and ensure deadline adherence
  • Manage SARS documentation, assessments, and notifications
  • Assist compliance officers with returns and tax administration
  • Manage GreatSoft-related tax issues and provisional tax runs
  • Ensure timely delivery of documents and payments to SARS
  • Follow up on client payments and disputes
  • Assist with Tax Exemption applications
  • Coordinate SARS visits and appointments for directors
  • Monitor and log tax queries and compliance for directors
  • Responsible for SAIT learners' training
  • Report monthly on tax matters and ensure team compliance
  • Adhere to quality management and ethical policies

Level of Independence:

Work independently under supervision, support administrative processes, and manage work as outlined above.
