Job summary

Organisational Description

The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls (The Academy) is a world-class educational platform for girls that is aimed at nurturing a new generation of dynamic women leaders. This residential boarding school is situated in Meyerton, Gauteng Province, with just over 300 students enrolled in Grades 8 -12. Grade 12. Students write the Independent Examination Board (I.E.B.) NSC Examination.

Role Overview

Candidates are required to coach swimming as a core sporting code. The coach will be responsible for introducing swimming skills and developing swimmers at varying ability levels. The coach will focus on building confidence, teaching proper technique, promoting water safety, fostering a love for the sport, and preparing students for both internal and external competitions.

This is a part-time, hourly paid position. The successful candidates will be paid per hour based on the number of hours worked. The successful candidates will be required to avail themselves for a minimum of four (4) and a maximum of six (6) hours per week, not exceeding 24 hours per month.

Minimum academic requirements and experience
  • Must have completed Grade 12 and hold recognised South African Basic Swimming Instructor/Coaching Certification.
  • Demonstrated experience as a working swimming coach or instructor, preferably with youth or beginner swimmers.
  • Strong understanding of stroke techniques, water safety rules, and beginner to advanced swimming training methods.
  • Valid First Aid Certification, including CPR and water rescue training, will be an added advantage.
Knowledge, Skills, and Attitude
  • Ability to teach and adapt swimming instruction to suit varying skill levels, from non-swimmers to emerging competitors.
  • Skill in identifying swimming talent and developing it through tailored training programmes.
  • Willingness to attend swim galas, inter-school competitions, and organise internal swimming events.
  • Event coordination skills to support or lead internal galas and inter-school competitions
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to explain concepts clearly and motivate learners.
  • Ability to work effectively as both an individual and within a coaching team.
  • Competence in working independently and collaboratively within a coaching or school sports team.
  • Commitment to personal growth and the development of swimmers.
  • Strong relationship-building skills with students, staff, and parents.
  • Effective time management, planning, and organisational skills to manage sessions and events efficiently.
  • Ability to handle pressure, especially in competition preparation, and to meet deadlines.
  • Open to continuous learning and committed to personal and professional growth.
  • Passionate about youth development and committed to fostering a love for swimming.
  • Demonstrate High levels of professionalism, competency, and initiative.
  • Willingness to learn how to use and implement the Neurosequential Model of Education (NME) in a coaching context.
