Position: Sustainable Development Manager
Job Description
To develop long-term sustainability strategy and ensure the successful implementation thereof, encompassing areas such as occupational health and safety (OH&S), environment, security. Oversees and leads the SHE Department and is responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating programs and initiatives aimed at improving the company's Sustainable Developmental performance.
The manager will identify external and internal sustainability trends, detect potential risks and opportunities, and assist the company in becoming a leader in industry peers in corporate governance and sustainability. Integrates SHE strategic processes throughout the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement sustainable development strategies and programs.
- Monitor and evaluate the impact of sustainable development initiatives.
- Identify opportunities for improvement and implement them.
- Implement monitoring and control systems for sustainable development.
- Prepare scope of work and tender specifications for activities to be tendered.
- Ensure compliance with relevant regulations and standards.
- Participate in litigation and resolve related issues.
- Analyze data, produce reports, and provide recommendations.
- Develop strategies and action plans to promote sustainable development.
- Communicate with regulators, business partners, stakeholders, and industry bodies.
- Oversee development of procedures related to sustainable development.
- Participate in awareness activities and train teams.
Licence to Operate
Ensures ongoing compliance with statutory SHE requirements for mine license maintenance by verifying compliance, advising management, and assisting with legislation implementation. Ensures thorough prevention inspections, accurate accident investigations, and proper documentation.
Department Management
- Manage staff and business partner performance, set standards, monitor, and train.
- Prepare and manage SHE budgets.
- Provide technical leadership, ensure legal compliance, and develop SHE standards and communication strategies.
Risk and Safety
- Develop risk mitigation strategies, oversee risk procedures, and produce annual sustainability reports.
- Ensure zero harm to employees, establish safe work environments, and follow up on safety audit findings.
Equipment and Systems
- IsoMetrix Safety Management system, ICAM surveillance, Workflow, Employee Self Service system.
Decisions and Judgements
- Make decisions within budgets and authority framework, inform management accordingly.
Stakeholder Relationships
Internal: Head Office, mine management, employees, business partners.
External: Regulatory authorities, industry councils, government departments.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Safety Management (NQF Level 7), 8-10 years' experience.
- Training in incident investigation, COMSOC 1 & 2, risk assessment; leadership qualification advantageous.
Skills and Attributes
