Job description

Position: Sustainable Development Manager
Job Description:

To develop long-term sustainability strategy and ensure its successful implementation, encompassing occupational health and safety (OH&S), environment, and security. Oversees and leads the SHE Department, responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating programs and initiatives aimed at improving the company's Sustainable Developmental performance.

The manager will identify external and internal sustainability trends, detect potential risks and opportunities, and assist the company in becoming a leader in industry peers in corporate governance and sustainability. Integrates SHE strategic processes throughout the organization.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Develop and implement Sustainable Development strategies and programs.
  2. Monitor and evaluate the impact of Sustainable Development on the company and its processes.
  3. Identify opportunities for improvement and implement them.
  4. Implement Sustainable Development monitoring and control systems.
  5. Ensure compliance with Sustainable Development regulations and standards.
  6. Participate in litigation and resolve Sustainable Development issues.
  7. Analyze data and produce reports and recommendations.
  8. Develop strategies and action plans to promote Sustainable Development.
  9. Communicate with regulators, business partners, stakeholders, and industry stakeholders.
  10. Oversee development of procedures and processes related to Sustainable Development.
  11. Participate in awareness-raising activities related to sustainable development.
  12. Train and coach teams in Sustainable Development.
Licence to Operate:

Ensures ongoing compliance with statutory SHE requirements for maintaining the mine license to operate by verifying compliance, advising management, and assisting with implementing SHE-related legislation and company rules. Ensures thorough prevention inspections, accurate accident investigations, and proper documentation.

Department Management:
  1. Manage staff and business partner performance, set standards, monitor, appraise, and train staff.
  2. Prepare and manage SHE budgets, report on variances.
  3. Provide technical leadership, ensure legal compliance, manage team performance, and enforce SHE standards.
  4. Develop and communicate SHE standards across all staff levels.
Risk Management:

Develop and report on risk mitigation strategies, oversee risk procedures, and maintain standards for sustainability management and reporting, including annual Sustainability Reports.

Safety:
  • Ensure ZERO HARM to employees and address safety audit findings.
  • Establish safe working environments and conduct training.
  • Follow up on safety audits and rectify system weaknesses.
Equipment and Systems:

Decisions and Judgements:

Make decisions within approved budgets and authority framework, with communication to management.

Stakeholder Relationships:

Internal: Head Office, management, employees, partners.

External: Regulatory authorities, industry bodies, business partners.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree Hons / Higher Diploma in Safety Management (NQF Level 7), 8-10 years experience.
  • Training: Incident investigation, COMSOC 1 & 2, Risk Assessment.
  • Leadership qualification advantageous.
Skills and Attributes:
