The Environmental Superintendent is responsible for driving sustainable environmental initiatives within the asset. This role ensures the effective implementation of the Environmental Management Plan, supports projects aimed at integrating sustainable development practices, and contributes to the advancement of the asset’s Environmental and Governance related strategies additionally, the incumbent leads the delivery and integration of environmental initiatives while developing tools and procedures to embed sustainability across all aspects of the asset.
Minimum Requirements
BSc degree in Natural Sciences, Environmental Management or equivalent qualification
ISO14001 Internal Auditor Certificate and ArcGIS Pro Standard Certificate
Minimum 5 years’ experience in tactical delivery of Environmental Management practice within the mining sector and an established specialist in leading water, biodiversity, waste, air, climate change, rehabilitation and related environmental management elements
Demonstrated capability in application of Environmental legislation and regulations, environmental permitting processes and related governance and monitoring
Valid South African Driver’s Licence
Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields
Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment

Sound spoken and written English communication skills.
Ability to cope with ambiguity, high personal resilience and change adaptability
In-depth understanding and application of Environmental laws and regulations (NEMA and SEMAs)
Advanced understanding of operational working culture and dealing with operational delivery challenges
Computer literacy - proficient in Microsoft Office packages
Duties And Responsibilities
Actively participate in, and lead interventions contributing to a culture of Zero Harm. Adhere to and ensure compliance with legislation, policies and procedures, operational standards, and governance requirements
Actively engage in and demonstrate Visible Felt Leadership aligned to asset SHE and risk standards and campaigns
Provide effective team leadership through inclusive and collaborative task and activity assignment, performance assessment, recognition and development aligned to discipline talent and succession management objectives
Actively support the company’s strategies and initiatives to promote a respectful, diverse and inclusive workplace culture
Lead asset delivery of sustainable development initiatives, develop supporting tools, and manage cross-functional engagement between the asset and all stakeholders
Participate in and develop tactical programmes to effect optimised delivery of the Environmental Management System, design and implement programmes to operationalise, sustain, and monitor performance
Implement, maintain, audit, and continuously optimise the Environmental Management and related standards (ISO 14001, GISTM, ICMC) to support the ESG strategy, operational objectives, and certifications
Identify and manage environmental risks and non-conformances and implement controls and related mitigation and monitoring interventions
Implement concurrent rehabilitation projects to manage asset footprint and closure liability reduction
Participate in environmental impact assessments and develop targeted interventions to manage the company’s reputation
Elevate and maintain meaningful engagement with internal and external stakeholders, including government regulators, industry groups, and communities
Effective budget management, optimising resource utilisation and adhering to allocated limits
