Kontak Recruitment seeks a Head of Conservation (JB6268) based in Kuruman, Northern Cape. This pivotal role leads conservation across a major privately protected ecosystem, combining ecological science, strategic vision and hands‑on fieldwork.

The successful candidate will shape long‑term ecological strategy, mentor specialist teams and liaise with global partners. Reporting to the General Manager, the role influences the entire operation and sustainability outcomes.

Qualifications

• Postgraduate qualification in Conservation Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related field
• 10–15 years of senior conservation or environmental management experience
• Proven track record in strategic planning, governance and team leadership
• Strong knowledge of conservation legislation and international best‑practice standards
• Ability to translate scientific data into actionable management decisions
• Exceptional stakeholder management across government, communities and donors
• High ethical standards with deep commitment to conservation outcomes

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement long‑term conservation strategies aligned with objectives and priorities
• Oversee biodiversity management, habitat restoration and ecosystem health monitoring
• Ensure compliance with national and international environmental legislation, permits and reporting
• Guide ecological research, monitoring programmes and data analysis
• Foster partnerships with academic institutions, NGOs and conservation bodies
• Lead, mentor and build capacity within Conservation Management teams
• Develop and manage budgets, capital projects and donor funding initiatives
• Represent the organisation at conservation forums and industry platforms
• Engage with communities, landowners and government agencies to support community‑based conservation
• Provide strategic guidance on conservation matters to executive management
• Identify and manage conservation risks including biodiversity loss and degradation
