Operating within a leading actor in the African technical supply chain serving the Energy, Mining, and Construction sectors, this role oversees and drives the expansion of the General Procurement category. Based out of the group’s Cape Town subsidiary, the position combines hands‑on operational sourcing and expediting with a strong strategic, analytical, and business development mandate. The primary focus involves structuring procurement processes, turning operational data into actionable strategic recommendations, and challenging current ways of working to drive efficiency. Combining commercial acumen with team leadership, this role is key to growing category market share, maintaining key supplier and client relationships, and mentoring a junior procurement team.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic & Process Improvement: Bring structure and strategic vision to the category, challenge existing ways of working, and implement more effective procurement processes.
- Data Analysis & Recommendations: Turn operational and market data into clear, actionable business and category recommendations.
- Team Development & Leadership: Coach, develop, and mentor a junior team of buyers, managing workload, productivity, turnaround times, efficiency, and work quality.
- Business Development & Client Management: Manage existing client relationships, research target markets, prepare client-specific proposals, and manage new business opportunities to grow the category.
- Sourcing & Supplier Negotiation: Source new local and international suppliers and products, establish strategic supplier relationships, and negotiate favorable commercial terms.
- Operational Execution: Oversee and participate directly in the preparation of accurate commercial and technical client proposals, including specification clarification, product quality, and profit margin analysis.
- Order Fulfillment & Claims Resolution: Work closely with logistics to expedite orders, ensure fulfillment, resolve client claims, and maintain department quality standards.
- Travel & Market Engagement: Conduct local and international commercial travel (averaging one week per month) to maintain and develop market presence.
- Performance Appraisal & Reporting: Perform regular activity analyses, assist with timely staff performance appraisals, and report directly to the Technical BU Manager.
Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years’ prior experience in procurement, sourcing, or category management.
- Proven history of successful leadership, team coaching, and staff development.
- Demonstrated analytical skills with the ability to convert data into strategic business recommendations.
- Strong strategic thinking capability with experience in refining processes and challenging existing operational methods.
- Sound business acumen and strong negotiation skills across local and international markets.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Strong organisational, time management, and project management capabilities.
- Willingness and ability to travel locally and internationally.
Desirable Requirements
- Proficiency in French (Advantageous).
- Proficiency in Portuguese (Advantageous).
- Prior supply chain experience within the Energy, Mining, or Construction industries in sub-Saharan Africa.
