Job description

Main Purpose of the Job: To provide strategic, operational, and financial leadership to the NGO, ensuring the organisation's long-term sustainability and commitment to promoting animal welfare. The General Manager will be responsible for driving the mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome animals while fostering strong relationships with stakeholders, managing a dedicated team, and ensuring sound financial practices and legislative compliance.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategy and Planning
  1. Develop strategies that align with the organisation's mission to advocate for animal welfare, including rescue, rehabilitation, rehoming and education programs.
  2. Develop an effective fundraising strategy.
  3. Identify opportunities for sustainable business growth and development.
  4. Develop plans to prepare the organisation and its Team for the future.
  5. Evaluate and motivate investments in equipment, infrastructure and people to support objectives.
  6. Develop and implement Employment Equity Plans for a diverse equitable, and inclusive workforce.
Organisational Effectiveness
  1. Implement innovative changes to bring continuous improvement in operations and animal welfare.
  2. Establish and maintain a motivated, productive and committed work environment.
  3. Prioritise, set, manage and meet project timelines.
  4. Supervise and manage a Fundraiser and ensure fundraising targets are met.
  5. Oversee the smooth running of operations, ensuring alignment with the organisation's mission.
  6. Evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of business processes and systems.
  7. Establish and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholder groups.
Financial Management and Reporting
  1. Establish a realistic, balanced annual budget, ensuring financial sustainability.
  2. Monitor grant funding, ensuring transparency and compliance with donor expectations and regulatory requirements.
  3. Monitor financial performance and take corrective action as needed.
  4. Implement tight financial control measures and ensure sound financial processes and practices are in place, compliant with legislative requirements.
  5. Provide quarterly financial reports to the Board.
  6. Oversee the annual audit and the sign-off of financials within the required timeframe.
  7. Manage memberships and Annual General Meetings.
Risk and Compliance
  1. Ensure legislative compliance, including but not limited to company law, animal welfare regulations, health and safety standards, BEE and Employment Equity legislation, and employment legislation.
  2. Monitor compliance with regulations specific to non-profit organisations and animal care standards.
  3. Identify risks and develop mitigation strategies, particularly in the areas of animal care and public engagement.
Team Leadership
  1. Lead by example, fostering a culture of compassion, continuous improvement and teamwork.
  2. Structure and develop the workforce to meet current and future organisational needs.
  3. Establish clear roles and responsibilities and enforce policies and procedures.
  4. Foster a positive, inclusive working environment that supports the mission and values of the NGO.
  5. Drive performance and take corrective action in cases of transgressions or poor performance.
  6. Always be courteous and polite to colleagues, clients and service providers and engender a spirit of mutual respect in the workplace.
