Job Mission / Objectives: The Card Manager at Access Bank is responsible for the product management of the Bank's full card product range as well as all associated services and activities, including assisting in defining the product strategy, portfolio performance, and client experience to support the four revenue pillars: Business and Commercial Banking, Alliance Banking, Retail Banking, and Agri Banking. The candidate will also provide guidance on card compliance issues, as set by the card associations in partnership with the Bank's compliance functions.

Product Development: The candidate must have a working knowledge of card schemes operating in South Africa, including familiarity with commercial models, technical aspects, new product initiation, value-added services, and all association requirements. The candidate will be the business lead in the development of all new card and associated products and capabilities. They should have a working knowledge of card types (credit, debit, prepaid, virtual, gift), EMV (chip and PIN), Contactless, tokenization, digitization, risk mitigation, and eCommerce functionality.

Product Management: Responsible for the end-to-end management of all card and related product capabilities. This will include representing Access Bank at various industry meetings relating to the card, as well as reporting on the Bank's card performance internally and externally. Use market insights, customer data, and customer feedback to improve the product offering.

The Manager is responsible for:

  1. Product development lead
  2. Operational product management including: BIN management
  3. Defining the operational process for Card Stock Management, to be undertaken by Operations.
  4. Process improvement and automation, including the chargeback process
  5. Lead support in the enablement and ideally automation of the process to efficiently manage Alliance Banking card requirements.
  6. The candidate will be the subject matter expert on all card issuing-related queries within the bank.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Ensure the end-to-end conceptualization, delivery, and management of a compelling set of card products and capabilities to the market, in line with the Bank's various segment strategies and value propositions.
  2. Ensure the product value proposition meets client needs and is competitive in the marketplace.
  3. Provide expert support in the acquisition or development of new card programs in the Alliance Banking business.
  4. Conduct market research to gain insight into client needs.
  5. Partner with Marketing and Channel teams to drive new card sales.
  6. Work with Finance/Risk to evaluate the performance of the card portfolio and identify opportunities.
  7. Monitor client feedback and drive best-in-class client experience.

Main Responsibilities:

  1. Product Development and Management: Introduce new card products with Access Bank and Alliance Banking. Card product development and management should be measured as a quantitative and qualitative assessment of efforts to enhance existing products and introduce new card products in line with the Bank's strategy, delivering new revenue opportunities and meeting changing business requirements.
  2. Card Scheme Relationship Management: Measured as a quantitative and qualitative review of how efficiently and effectively issues and queries are resolved, the general effectiveness of the Bank's relationships with the card associations, and favorable negotiation and achievement of support agreement targets and objectives.
  3. Regulatory and Industry Management: Measured as a quantitative assessment of the Bank's management of and adherence to the industry payments landscape.
  4. PASA and PCH representative.
  5. Revenue Management, Interchange, and Bi-lateral Management: Measured as a quantitative and qualitative assessment of the revenues achieved through card revenues vs budget bank-wide.
  6. Onboarding support for new card programs in direct support of Alliance Banking.
  7. Operational efficiencies in ensuring revenue improvements (e.g., bin stock management).

Requirements:

Academic Knowledge: Minimum of a 3-year tertiary education, ideally a commerce-related degree, or compensated for through related experience.

Work Experience: Must have a minimum of 3 – 5 years' experience in card product management, development, or enablement in a banking, payments, fintech, or related environment. Preferably work exposure to new card program implementations (debit, prepaid, and/or credit).

Skills / Specialized Know How: Expert knowledge of the card industry within the South African payments system, preferably including some technical skill. Strong relationship management and negotiation skills are essential. Strong financial and analytical skills.

Competencies: Ability to multi-task across multiple projects and relationships, strong EQ and partnership management capabilities, diplomacy, negotiation skills, performance management abilities, strong service ethic, business development skills, and strong communication skills are essential. Highly numerate and analytical.
