Job summary

Tiger Brands Paarl site is seeking a SSE Officer to lead health, safety, security and environmental compliance. You will drive continuous improvement programs and manage risk assessments to protect people and the environment at the Paarl plant.

You will implement and maintain safety and environmental management systems, ensure legal adherence, and guide site teams on best practices. This role reports to the Plant Manager and demands strong leadership and communication skills.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 4 years Safety Officer experience in the Food/Beverage industry.
  • National Higher Diploma Environmental Health and/or SAMTRAC Certification.
  • Experience with SHE management systems and risk assessment processes.

Responsibilities

  • Tailor the safety system to each operation and update it as legislation changes.
  • Maintain and update documentation of applicable laws and regulations.
  • Build a database of national, provincial and municipal legislation and summarize key responsibilities.
  • Design and implement best practices based on legislative requirements.
  • Train personnel in correct application of practices and ensure implementation.
  • Coordinate incident investigations and follow up actions with root cause analysis.

The Job At a Glance

You will create an environment that is conducive to Tiger Brands continuous improvement in the fields of Health, Safety, Security and Environmental compliance, enabling Tiger Brands to achieve its objectives in the above-mentioned fields of legal compliance and social responsibility. You will implement and maintain the international safety and environmental management systems and ensure the site adherence to all SHE related legislation.

You will facilitate the identification of site risks with the HODs and lead the documentation of the risk assessment matrices.

The SSE Officer is the custodian of safe working practices. The candidate will ensure that all work is carried out according to SHE policies, standards, and procedures by implementing a behavioral based safety program on site. They are further required to supply SHE guidance and support to the site and monitor compliance through the facilitation of SHE incident investigations being conducted and following up on actions completed. Root cause analysis tools will be utilized for identify and implementing preventative actions for SHE.

What You Will Do
  • Adjust the system in such a way that the system is tailor made for each type of operation and activity.
  • Update the system as changes occur within legislation.
  • Update the system as changes occurred at Tiger Brands Manufacturing sites
  • Build up a database of all National, Provincial and Municipal legislation.
  • Summarize legislation into key areas of responsibilities.
  • Design best practices based on legislative requirements.
  • Train applicable persons in the correct application of such best practices.
  • Implement and monitor best practice implementation.
  • Training where required and requested.
  • Ensuring that Paarl Plant is informed of new legislative requirements and how these requirements are applicable to the site
  • Ensuring that all Legal Appointments as per the Occupational Health and Safety Act is in place and that these appointments are updated with changes in the organisation.
  • Writing of new best practices and standards as per new legislation.
  • Assisting with the implementation of new standards and possible training needs required.
  • Keeping all Tiger Brands sites informed of legislative requirements and new requirements (e.g. Air Quality Act) and the impact of such legislation on Tiger Brands sites.
  • Designing new standards and updating the Tiger Brands Environmental System to adapt to new legislation and requirements.
  • Providing training workshops to inform Paarl Plant of possible changes and the impact of associated changes.
  • Information gathering form all Tiger Brands site on a monthly basis.
  • Compiling reports on a fixed agreed format.
  • Distributing monthly Risk reports to the applicable designated persons.
  • Attend meetings with MARSH to ensure that auditing is done correctly and as per standard required by Tiger Brands.
  • Evaluate Audit reports for compliance.
  • Organize special investigations as required and when required with the if needed.
  • Evaluate Insurance standards and recommend changes if required.
  • Where requested, assist Tiger Brands sites with formal and informal investigations of accidents in the workplace.
  • Evaluate Audit reports for compliance.

  • Liaise with the Department of Labour and Compensation Commissioner on accidents and progress of claims.
  • Get all applicable information from approved (legal) vendors.
  • Place information on database.
  • Keep database updated.
  • Liaise with vendors to ensure legal approval.
  • Gather information from Paarl Site on current Utility outage measures and evaluate the effectiveness of these measures
  • Prevention of further loss
  • Effective post loss remedial measures
  • Successful investigation of matters leading to disciplinary action & or criminal prosecution.
  • Ensuring personal integrity and constitutional rights are not infringed.
  • Containment of loss.
  • Identification of perpetrators.
  • Accurate information for internal disciplinary enquiries & Criminal prosecution.
