Core purpose of the role
To provide quality spray painting work as efficiently and effectively as possible.
Key deliverables and outputs
Mix Paint
- Fast-moving colours are mixed in advance (e.g. black and silver)
- Before mixing the paint, check the colour of the vehicle against the sample of the colour profile
- Colours that are not used frequently are mixed when the Flattener is busy preparing the vehicle.
Prepare to Spray Paint
- Receive the schedule of vehicles to be sprayed from the Supervisor on a weekly basis and promised delivery dates are noted on the production list
- Vehicles are sprayed when the Flattener has prepared the vehicle and notified the spray painting department
- Spray guns are cleaned with cleaning agent E3 before adding a new paint colour. Pour new paint into the spray gun via a paint strainer
- Ensure that proper safety clothing is worn i.e. spray overall, surgical gloves and mask
- Fetch materials from the parts storesman
- Check the vehicle as per the job card
- Close the spray booth when the vehicle is inside and switch on the fan
- Do body repair as per the job card and obtain authorisation before any additional work is done
- Use special tools as required
- Report any additional work to be carried out to the Workshop Manager/Supervisor
- Report any delays to the supervisor/manager.
Spray Paint the Vehicle
- Ensure that proper safety clothing is worn i.e. spray overall, surgical gloves and mask
- Clean vehicle surface with clean air from the spray gun to remove dust and catch the dust in the tak rag
- Ensure the air coming through the airline is two bar before starting to spray
- Ensure the spray booth temperature is 22 -27 degrees Celsius
- Complete first coat with a mist/light coat and put blowers on the sprayed area at a 45 degree angle until the paint is dry (10 - 15 minutes). Switch off and remove blowers and apply another wet coat
- Clean sprayed area with tak rag before applying a drop/finishing coat - once complete, put blowers on at 45 degrees and leave to dry
- Leave the spray booth and ensure the door is closed completely
- Clean the spray colour gun with the gun cleaning machine
- In the mixing room, mix the clear coat in the special mixing container - ensure correct quantities are mixed together (2:2:1 Clear, hardener, thinners)
- Mix liquids thoroughly to ensure chemical are mixed through
- Pour mixture into clear gun via paint strainer
- In the spray booth, remove blowers and clean with tak rag before applying the clear coat
- Apply first coat - semi-wet
- Flash off time to apply is 15 minutes - after flash off time, apply second full coat of clear
- Check for imperfections e.g. fish eyes
- Leave the vehicle to flash off in the spray booth and clean clear gun
- After 15 minutes flash off, bake the oven at 60 degrees for 30 minutes
- Hand the vehicle back to the Flattener.
Clock the Job Card
- When notified by the Flattener about a vehicle ready to spray paint, check the job card and that the registration number corresponds and clock on
- Read the job card to see what work has to be carried out
- Inspect the car for any damage inside and outside prior to moving it
- Wait until the first coat has been applied and check that no defects are picked up - if the first coat is in order, return to the work bay, clock out the job and clock onto the new job.
Achieve Productivity Targets
- Ensure understanding and knowledge of targets
- Targets are met at all times
- Report any unexpected delays to minimise downtime.
Judgement
- Plan which vehicles are to be sprayed to ensure that clients receive their vehicles on the promised delivery date and time
- Ensure that clear mixture is the correct quantity required for the job.
Complete Job Cards
- Check the job card on receipt - check registration number of vehicle to job card and clock job card on
- Overtime to be verified at all times
- Clock the job card off when the vehicle is baking in the spray booth
- Keep job card neat and tidy
- Notify workshop manager/supervisor when spray job is completed
- Ensure manufacturer standards and procedures are adhered to for warranty work.

Academic Qualifications
Essential:
- Matric
- Valid Driver’s License.
Advantageous:
Note: The role may require the incumbent to work flexible hours or overtime.
Work Experience
Essential:
- 2-3 Years’ Previous Spray-Painting experience.
