Job Description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

To serve as a Specialist: Space Investigations who is responsible for directing (1) Space- and infrastructure investigations up to Project Business Case phase by leading professional consultants and project teams; (2) participating in strategic space and infrastructure planning; (3 & 4) Executing strategic space management functions such as move planning, space allocations for infrastructure projects.

Key Responsibilities

Direct space and infrastructure investigations for the NWU 3 Year Infrastructure Plan.

  • Stage 0: Direct infrastructure investigations to determine how space or infrastructure requirements in the University Environment can be met. Complete option analysis, concept drawings and recommend cost effective solutions for initiation phase of projects and have initiation report approved.
  • Stage 1 & 2: Direct the professional consultants and project team for the Business Case phase in developing a project (incl deliverables: signed-off scope of work reports, concept drawings, project budgets and project timelines) for larger capital projects to be approved by Council as part of the NWU Infrastructure Plan.
  • Provide progress reports to direct manager.

Strategic Space & Infrastructure Planning.

  • Present Business Cases to the Facilities Task Team and Senior Management to recommend projects for inclusion in the 3 Year Infrastructure Plan.
  • Provide inputs into strategic space planning activities such as the revision of the NWU spatial master development plan by providing information in insights.

Space Planning and Space Allocations.

  • Oversee and execute Space Planning and Space Allocations according to space norms and approved space management guidelines to ensure optimal utilization of space as an alternative to providing new space.

Move planning.

  • Manage move planning related to infrastructure projects when decanting needs to take place.

Minimum Requirements

  • A degree (NQF level 7) in Planning or the Built Environment.
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ operational experience in office planning.

Added Advantages & Preferences

  • A minimum of two (2) years’ experience in space management (space norms, space planning, allocations, move planning).

Key Functional/ Technical Competencies

  • Able to understand requirements for infrastructure and spaces and translating into concept drawings.
  • Space Planning capabilities.
  • Drawing basic building lay-outs based on user requirements.
  • Knowledge and experience in space management principles.
  • Good verbal communication and report writing skills.
  • Computer Literacy: MS Excel.
  • CAD software capabilities.
  • Compile basic cost estimates.
  • Compiling basic project budgets.

  • Able to work independently without direct supervision.
