Position Overview:
We are seeking a skilled and experienced Solar Installation Electrician to join our dynamic MetSolar team. The ideal candidate will play a critical role in the installation, commissioning, and maintenance of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and integrated solar communication systems across residential, commercial, and industrial sites. This position requires hands-on expertise in electrical installations and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced project environment.
Duties & Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
Site Assessment & Planning
- Conduct comprehensive site inspections to evaluate the installation requirements of solar PV, BESS, and system communication infrastructure.
- Provide input on optimal system layout and design for maximum efficiency and performance.
Installation & Commissioning
- Set up inverters, charge controllers, communication devices, batteries, and other balance-of-system components.
- Complete electrical wiring, conduit runs, trenching, and interconnections between PV modules, inverters, and the grid or backup systems.
- Ensure systems are installed in accordance with relevant electrical codes, safety standards, and design specifications.
Testing & Troubleshooting
- Perform system diagnostics using electrical test equipment to verify proper system functionality.
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to solar PV, BESS, and communication systems.
- Ensure all systems meet commissioning requirements and performance benchmarks.
Maintenance & Support
- Conduct regular maintenance on solar panels, inverters, battery systems, and monitoring/communication devices.
- Perform cleaning, inspections, and minor repairs as needed.
- Provide post-installation support and ensure long-term system health.
Additional Duties:
- Program and configure solar inverters, charge controllers, and communication interfaces.
- Install and integrate solar monitoring platforms (e.g., cloud-based dashboards, data loggers).
- Train end-users and clients on the operation and basic troubleshooting of their solar systems.
- Maintain accurate documentation including installation records, testing logs, and service reports.
Desired Experience & Qualification
Requirements:
Qualifications & Experience:
- Qualified Electrician with a valid South African trade certificate (Red Seal preferred).
- Minimum of 3 years' experience in solar PV system installation, including BESS and communication systems.
- Knowledge of South African electrical codes, renewable energy regulations, and safety protocols (e.g., SANS 10142-1).
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to project sites.
Skills:
- Strong technical and electrical troubleshooting skills.
- Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and electrical test equipment.
- Familiarity with inverter programming, solar software platforms, and remote monitoring systems.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and solar system schematics.
