Sandown Motor Holdings (SMH), a subsidiary of Daimler Truck Southern Africa Ltd, is excited to announce a challenging opportunity for a dynamic and motivated Diesel Mechanic Apprentice to join our team at the Centurion Sandown Workshop. SMH is looking for a candidate who has a passion for commercial vehicles and aspires to become a qualified Diesel Technician.

Job Overview

This apprenticeship provides an opportunity to grow in the diesel mechanic trade, working under the supervision of a qualified technician.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Maintenance support:

• Ensure work is authorized by relevant stakeholders.
• Meet DTSA prescribed flat rate times for repairs and services as a minimum standard, applying technical skills efficiently.
• Carry out repairs as per job card.
• Seek supervisory support and advice when necessary during repairs.

Customer service:

• Handle customer vehicles and property with care.
• Maintain customer care standards at all times.
• Inform Foreman and Service Advisor of potential issues and delays.
• Use seat covers at all times.
• Apply quality workmanship consistently.
• Ensure all work meets DTSA quality standards.
• Secure replaced parts and make them available for customer inspection.

Administration and cost control:

• Complete job cards accurately.
• Conduct fault finding and report findings.
• Adhere to warranty, maintenance, and dealer standards.
• Record hours worked accurately; note if not clocked and have it signed off by the foreman.
• Record material usage accurately.
• Attach relevant documentation to the job card.
• Follow warranty and parts control systems.
• Handle vehicles carefully to avoid damage.
• Minimize wastage of materials, oils, and fluids.
• Submit completed job cards promptly.

Housekeeping, SHE adherence:

• Use tools and equipment correctly as per instructions.
• Maintain and secure tools according to guidelines.
• Keep work area clean and organized.
• Comply with SHE and statutory requirements.
• Familiarize with and follow company policies and procedures.

Self-development:

• Take responsibility for learning and development.
• Adhere to learnership agreements with MERSETA.
• Submit training portfolios on time.

Qualifications:

• Grade 12 with Mathematics, Science, and English / Technical Matric / N2 in Mechanical Engineering or Diesel Motor Mechanic.
• Computer literacy.

Skills & personal attributes:

• Integrity, teamwork, follow-through skills.
• Self-driven, resilient, able to cope with pressure.
• Good interpersonal skills and emotional maturity.

Special Knowledge:

• Knowledge of commercial vehicles and automotive systems.
