Job description

Position Summary:
The Senior Data Analyst/Telescope Operator will be part of the science operations team, leading a team of 4-5 data analysts/operators to support SKA-Mid science operations during the construction phase. Responsibilities include developing operator procedures, mentoring team members, and managing day-to-day telescope observations, data quality assurance, and science verification. The role requires working in 24/7 shift patterns.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage team performance of data analysts/telescope operators
  • Design and document operating procedures for SKAO
  • Conduct, monitor, and calibrate astronomical observations using appropriate computing resources
  • Ensure data quality and timely completion of QA tasks
  • Facilitate communication between engineering, technical staff, and scientific stakeholders

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree / Advanced Diploma / NQF 7

Minimum Experience:
4-6 years in a relevant technical or scientific environment, with qualifications as follows:

  • MSc in physics, astronomy, engineering, computing, or related discipline with 4 years’ experience
  • OR BSc (Hons) in the same fields with 5 years’ experience
  • OR Undergraduate degree with 6 years’ experience

Additional Experience and Knowledge:
Leading teams, operating scientific instruments, developing operational procedures, data analysis, and knowledge of radio astronomy principles, software, and control systems.

Skills and Competencies:
Knowledge of control and monitoring software, technical report writing, scientific computing (Python, C/C++), leadership, problem-solving, teamwork, communication skills, and commitment to diversity and inclusion. Ability to work in shift rotations, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Desirable qualities include working under pressure, familiarity with Agile practices, and strong leadership skills.
