Role Overview

As a Short-Term Insurance Underwriter, you will be responsible for managing the full underwriting process of personal lines, commercial lines, and specialty insurance products. From assessing risks to handling policy administration, your ability to provide accurate, compliant, and timely underwriting services will be key to maintaining client trust and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

Underwriting and Risk Assessment:

  • Evaluate risks for personal, commercial, and niche short-term insurance policies.

  • Apply sound underwriting principles in accordance with company guidelines and regulatory standards.

  • Ensure all policies are compliant with FAIS and RE5 requirements.

Policy Administration:

  • Handle new applications, amendments, renewals, endorsements, and cancellations.

  • Accurately process premiums, adjustments, and ensure invoicing is completed on time.

  • Maintain updated client and policy records through the policy administration system.

Client and Broker Liaison:

  • Build strong relationships with brokers and clients, offering professional support and expert advice.

  • Communicate policy decisions clearly and confidently in both English and Afrikaans.

  • Assist in resolving underwriting queries with a solutions-driven approach.

Compliance and Quality Control:

  • Ensure all documentation meets industry and company compliance standards.

  • Conduct internal audits of policy files to maintain consistency and quality.

  • Stay up to date with regulatory changes in the short-term insurance industry.

Reporting and Analysis:

  • Prepare underwriting reports and performance metrics for internal review.

  • Identify trends and potential risk exposure to inform business decisions.

Minimum Requirements:
  • RE5 Certification (Non-Negotiable)

  • FAIS Accredited (Full Qualification for Short-Term Insurance)

  • Minimum 3–5 years’ underwriting experience in short-term insurance

  • Strong understanding of personal and commercial lines insurance

  • Fully bilingual in English and Afrikaans – both written and verbal

  • Computer literate (MS Office, policy admin systems, underwriting platforms)

  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills

  • Attention to detail with a high level of accuracy and consistency

  • Proven ability to work independently and within a team

  • Professional demeanor and client-first mindset
