Role Purpose: To lead, manage, and continuously improve the SHE framework across the operation in alignment with ISO standards.
This role is critical in fostering a culture of safety, ensuring legal compliance, enabling operational continuity, and contributing to the organisation's sustainability goals.
Key Responsibilities:
SHE Management & Compliance
- Maintain and improve the ISO-certified safety management system.
- Drive ISO integration efforts toward environmental accreditation.
- Conduct and document recurring inspections (PPE, scaffolding, gear, tools, fire equipment).
- Maintain and update SHE registers, accident/incident logs, and visual dashboards.
- Perform daily random safety checks with appointed SHE representatives (Gemba walks weekly).
- Ensure contractor and subcontractor safety files are validated and current.
Training & Awareness
- Coordinate and deliver SHE induction training for new employees, contractors, and visitors.
- Facilitate toolbox talks and SOP-related training across shifts in collaboration with Supervisors.
- Arrange medical fitness assessments and enforce policy for alcohol retesting.
- Act as the communication link between staff and management for SHE issues.
Incident Response & Reporting
- Investigate all workplace incidents and ensure accurate and timely reporting.
- Transport IOD cases to medical facilities when required.
- Conduct drills and system stress tests; maintain corresponding records.
Standards & Documentation
- Enforce legal compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and other legal requirements.
- Manage and update digital and hardcopy safety documentation platforms.
- Support internal and external ISO audits; contribute to continuous system improvement.
Cross-functional Leadership
- Chair monthly SHE meetings.
- Liaise with external safety service providers and maintain engagement records.
- Log CIP activities and manage SHEQ admin support.
- Provide guidance to other HODs and participate in cross-departmental initiatives.
Education & Training Requirements
- SAMTRAC or equivalent (National Diploma in Safety Management).
- Legal Liability Certification.
- HIRA (Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment).
- Risk & Socio-Environmental Sustainability training.
- First Aid Level 3 & Firefighting (advantageous).
Knowledge & Experience
- Minimum 5 years experience in a similar SHE leadership role.
- Proven experience managing ISO systems.
- Practical understanding of occupational health legislation and SHEQ systems.
