Job summary

Campbell Scientific Africa in Pretoria seeks a Services Technician to perform on-site environmental measurement system installation and maintenance. You will travel across South Africa and parts of Africa, installing logging equipment, troubleshooting faults, and training customers in operation and upkeep.

Responsibilities

Environment: Campbell Scientific Africa, Pretoria Office

  • Role Description

The Services Technician provides high quality, on-site, environmental measurement systems and sensor installation and/or maintenance for both external and internal Campbell Scientific customers and stakeholders. Working closely with both the sales and delivery teams, the Installation and Maintenance Technician is expected to organise and deliver on-site installation and scheduled maintenance visits for equipment installed at customer premises and remote locations across South Africa and parts of Africa.

This role requires working out of the office and off-site (in the field) for a minimum of 60% of the time, with extensive travel away from home.

  • Main Responsibilities

Note: The term “customer” includes all channels through which Campbell Scientific Africa exposes its products and services, including End Users, OEMs, Resellers, Agents, Systems Integrators, other Campbell Scientific Group Companies, and their Subsidiaries.

Field Services Activities

  • Perform on-site maintenance and fault diagnosis for Campbell Scientific and third-party environmental monitoring systems and sensors.
  • Perform on-site installation of Campbell Scientific and third-party equipment, including tower erection, bracket assembly, wiring (including armoured cable termination), working with conduit (both underground and surface mounted), and occasionally small-scale civils work for pole/cabinet installations.
  • Install dataloggers, software, communication methods, and protocols to Campbell Scientific loggers.
  • Understand and troubleshoot a variety of communication methods and protocols such as Ethernet, serial, cellular, and radio.
  • Build equipment according to instructions, follow installation notes, and read and interpret wiring diagrams.
  • Work extended hours and undertake travel on company business when required, including overnight stays within South Africa and other parts of Africa.
  • Train customers on the installation, operation, and maintenance of Campbell Scientific equipment.
  • Communicate professionally with customers and identify future business opportunities while on-site.
  • Collaborate with internal colleagues across various company functions and contribute to planning and performance delivery.
  • Adhere to all work safety and health protocols.
  • Document activities following company procedures and using company systems.
  • Maintain an excellent working knowledge of the company’s products and services.
  • Perform any other duties as required by the company commensurate with the role and required skills.

Technical Support and Training Activities

  • Participate in technical support tickets to translate field experience to customers and enhance feedback to production.
  • Transfer technical expertise professionally to less experienced audiences.

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Provide training to customers and staff.
  • Attend and set up equipment at conferences.
  • Perform any other ad hoc tasks as required.

General

  • Maintain an excellent working knowledge of the company’s products and services.
  • Undertake travel on company business when required.

  • Experience in working with Campbell Scientific hardware offering and communication protocols.
  • Understanding of scientific principles underlying measurements and instrument operation in target market.
  • Pragmatic and methodical approach to fault identification and resolution.
  • A strong customer focus and experience working directly with customers to develop and maintain professional relationships.
  • Good attention to detail and ability to translate concepts into physical hardware and software deliverables.
  • Excellent communicator, both written and verbal.
  • ‘Can-do’ and positive attitude; innovative and creative in searching for better ways to do things.
  • Ability to give instructions and relay complex information to a non-technical audience.
  • Experience working as part of a team with shared responsibilities and targets.
  • Hold a valid RSA driving license.
  • Willingness to travel within Southern Africa and globally if required.
  • Experience in planning and coordinating activities for others.
  • Medically fit and physically capable of fulfilling all responsibilities.
  • NQF level 6 or higher qualification.
