Job summary

Old Mutual Limited in Johannesburg seeks an experienced Underwriter Manager to lead a group of underwriters, oversee decision processes and assess high-risk cases. You will approve or deny applications within governance guidelines and assist in planning the department's controls.

The role requires a Grade 12, Commerce qualification and Mark 4 underwriting experience. The position focuses on preparing quotations, issuing policy documents, reviewing policies for risk, and ensuring smooth policy

Qualifications

  • Must have Grade 12 and a tertiary commerce qualification (NQF 6-7) or be studying towards a commercial degree.
  • Must have passed the Mark 4 Underwriting Technical Test.
  • Must have experience as an Underwriter at Mark 4 level with a mandate.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the activities of a group of Underwriters and oversee the decision process.

  • Review existing policies to assess credit risks and ensure governance compliance.
  • Prepare quotations in response to proposals for credit insurance cover and issue policy documents.
  • Identify cost-effective solutions and improve operational efficiency.
  • Supervise staff and manage workflow to ensure timely service.

Job Description

Responsible for managing the activities of a group of Underwriters. Oversees the decision process for the group. Monitors decisions of Underwriters and ensures systems and work flow meet appropriate standards. Selects and accepts major risks on behalf of the company and assists in the planning and control of the department. Assesses most complex situations that involve greatest risk. Within company guidelines, approves or denies applications on own discretion.

  • Review existing policies on a regular basis and to assess credit risks
  • Ensure smooth administration of policies by giving prompt attention to all correspondence, emails and telephone calls received from branches, policyholders, brokers and other parties
  • Supervise staff, plan and organise workflow
  • Continuous improvement to ensure effective service
  • Ensure statutory and legislative knowledge is always current in order to resolve customer complaints, to advise the business on corrective solutions to mitigate risks and to improve the customer experience whilst complying with governance CONFIDENTIA requirements.
  • Ensure adherence to organisational policies, practices and procedures.
  • Identify solutions to enhance cost effectiveness and increase operational efficiency
  • Service delivery to ensure customer satisfaction
  • Maintain service, quality and desired outputs within a specific functional process through ensuring compliance to tactical policies, procedures and standards.

  • Grade 12
  • Tertiary qualification in Commerce (NQF Level 6-7 or equivalent) or studying towards a Commercial degree
  • Must have passed the Mark 4 Underwriting Technical Test
  • Must have experience as an Underwriter at Mark 4 level
  • Must have a mandate and prior experience will be required
  • Have in depth knowledge of the commodities in the industry and must have worked with policy holders Underwriting skills at policy holder level
  • Must have excellent communication and relationship building skills.
  • Must have a Code 8 Drivers License and own transport
