The Digital Media Specialist will serve as the Head of Fund for a large Tshikululu Client focused on social investment in digital media, providing strategic leadership and operational oversight.
This role is critical in ensuring the effective implementation, monitoring, and impact of the Fund, designed to support South Africa's small to medium-scale businesses in the news media sector.
The specialist will drive innovation and sustainability while serving as the public face of the Fund. The Digital Media Specialist will ensure that the service level agreement (SLA) and client strategies are delivered according to plan and to standard and will build strategic engagements with external stakeholders to support the delivery of the Fund's strategies.
This will be achieved by leading the development and implementation of digital media strategies, managing relationships effectively, and delivering high-impact social investment solutions in the news media sector.
Key Performance Areas, Activities, and Indicators
- Lead the strategic management and implementation of the Fund's strategies.
- Lead the design and execution of the Client Fund's strategic initiatives, ensuring alignment with its mission and objectives.
- Lead the formulation and execution of the Fund's strategies to deliver on the defined Key Performance Indicators.
- Present strategy outcomes and implement lessons learned.
- Work closely with the Head of Clients and the Head of Social Impact to develop and implement social investment strategies and monitoring and evaluation frameworks in digital media.
These must align to and enhance the Fund's social investment objectives in digital media.
Oversee the formulation of the annual budget and the allocation of funds
- Lead the RFP Process and Beneficiary Management.
- Develop criteria and oversee the Request for Proposals (RFP) process.
- Leverage an understanding of digital marketing strategies and best practice to ensure rigorous evaluation of RFP responses leading to fair selection of beneficiaries.
- Vet beneficiaries in alignment with industry standards and the Fund objectives, in collaboration with the adjudication panel and Tshikululu's internal administration and governance teams.
- Work with the broader Tshikululu team to assist and guide applicants with the application process.
- Provide timely feedback to beneficiaries.
Manage the Monitoring, Reporting, and Impact Assessment
- Collaborate with the Tshikululu's M&E team to define and implement the Fund's monitoring and evaluation (M&E) framework.
- Co-lead the development of impact measurement strategies with internal M&E specialists.
- Evaluate and report on the impact of strategies by working with the Monitoring and Evaluation teams to undertake required analyses, to collate and report by agreed upon deadlines.
- Provide quarterly and annual progress reports detailing the Fund's activities and impact on beneficiaries.
Engage as a public representative of the Fund
- In collaboration with the Tshikululu Head of Clients and the Client leadership team, manage external communications, media engagements, and stakeholder relationships.
- Represent the Fund at industry events, conferences, and public forums.
- Oversee the appointment and management of external PR and marketing service providers.
- Provide input into the Fund's branding, communications strategy, and public awareness campaigns.
- Collaborate effectively with the Tshikululu Communications Department to manage third-party organisations that deliver on the Fund's marketing, public relations, and communication agendas, including the oversight of the development and maintenance of a website and corporate identity of the Fund.
Lead the stakeholder relationship management function
- Liaise with trustees of the Fund, the oversight board, adjudication committee, and other stakeholders to ensure transparent governance and alignment with the Fund's objectives.
- Build partnerships with industry experts and stakeholders to enhance the Fund's sustainability and relevance.
- Proactively build and maintain relationships with stakeholders, including implementing partners.
- Monitor new developments in the digital media sector, trends, and regulations – testing innovative approaches to ensure that the Fund's social investment initiatives remain effective, resilient, ethical, and well-governed.
Manage the day-to-day operations of the Fund
- Work closely with Tshikululu Heads of Departments to ensure the implementation of the Fund's strategies are in line with policies and procedures.
- Identify and resolve risks / challenges that impact the Fund's strategies.
- Develop project plans for the internal team to ensure effective and high-quality service delivery to the client, on deadline and to standard to ensure client satisfaction and retention.
- Develop relationships with all internal Tshikululu stakeholders to ensure effective and professional implementation of the strategies.
- Implement Tshikululu's approach to client management by complying and delivering to standards on an ongoing basis.
- Maintain accountabilities for all deliverables submitted to the client by overseeing, commenting, amending, and providing feedback before deliverables are distributed to the client.
- Ensure that client meetings are planned for, and that the necessary supporting documentation is delivered on time and to standard.
- Monitor budget approvals.
Working closely with the Finance Department, ensure that the management accounts are up-to-date and accurate, and that the annual external audit as well as any special audits are conducted on time and to standard.
Oversee day to day management of financial processes alongside internal Finance Department, including disbursements to beneficiaries.
In conjunction with the Head of Clients, negotiate SLAs and management fees with the client in accordance with Tshikululu's policies, procedures, and standards.
Complete internal management reports accurately against defined standards, resolving issues within SLA.
Develop and submit any other reports by collecting the required information and making submissions according to the defined structures.
Periodically conduct site visits to assess beneficiary performance and provide guidance.
Role Requirements
- Honours Degree with a strong emphasis on Digital Media, Communications, Commerce or similar (Master's degree is preferred).
- At least 10 years' experience in digital media or a related sector.
- A proven track record of project management and leadership.
- Strong knowledge of South Africa's media landscape, including challenges and opportunities in digital transformation.
- Experience with RFP processes, governance structures, and impact monitoring.
- 5–7 years of client relationship / account management / project management experience.
- A minimum of 2 years leading, developing, and implementing programmes and solutions in sustainability, corporate social investments, and / or transformation experience is preferred.
