An established agency seeks a Strategic Communications Consultant to enhance its leadership in disaster risk management and climate change. This role involves strategic positioning, thought leadership, and knowledge sharing to ensure the agency remains a leading voice on the continent and globally. The consultant will manage relationships, oversee reporting, and implement communication strategies, contributing to advocacy and visibility efforts. Division: ARC African Risk Capacity
Duty Station: Johannesburg (with a possibility to relocate to Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire within the contract period)
Duration: 11 months with the possibility of extension
Reporting to: ARC Director General with some workstreams reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, ARC
ARC is a Specialised Agency of the African Union that offers an African solution to climate change and disease outbreaks. It works with AU member states to plan, prepare, and respond to climate-induced disasters and outbreaks, utilizing a continental early response mechanism and index-based weather risk insurance pool.
Since its founding, ARC has expanded its reach and impact, covering more people with diversified products that protect against droughts, cyclones, and epidemics, contributing to food security and sustainable development.
The primary role of the Strategic Communications Consultant is to support ARC's leadership in staying abreast of developments in disaster risk management and climate change, using innovative tools and platforms to elevate ARC’s understanding and showcase its expertise.
The role involves strategic positioning, thought leadership, knowledge sharing, and ensuring ARC remains a leading voice on the continent and globally. It includes developing targeted messages, influencing policy, and supporting the development of ARC’s strategies to meet stakeholder needs.
The consultant will also oversee reporting to key stakeholders, ensuring accuracy, professionalism, and timeliness, and will support other functions by enhancing communication, advocacy, and visibility efforts.
Accountabilities are categorized into three workstreams:
Education: Advanced university degree in communications or related field.
Experience: 8-10 years in a strategic communication role, with proven ability to manage relationships and work in multicultural environments.
Skills: Strong writing, research, planning, and organizational skills; proficiency in relevant software; fluency in English; French is an asset.
