Job summary

Placements24 in South Africa seeks a Remote Telecommunications Systems Architect to lead the overall architecture of complex telecom systems, ensuring scalability, security and performance. This senior role offers remote-first work from anywhere and influences systems supporting operations across SA, including the North West region.

You will design high-level architectures, select technologies, guide SDN, 4G/5G, cloud-native infra, and mentor distributed engineering teams.

Qualifications

• Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Telecommunications Engineering, or a related field.
• 10+ years of experience designing and architecting complex telecommunications systems.
• Expertise in mobile networks (4G/5G), optical transport, VoIP, cloud-native infrastructure, and SDN.
• Proven experience with large-scale system design, integration, and deployment.
• Cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and containerization (Kubernetes, Docker).
• Strong understanding of network protocols, security, and data management.

Responsibilities

• Define and document the high-level architecture for new telecommunications systems and platforms.
• Evaluate and select technologies, protocols, and standards to meet system requirements.
• Develop detailed architectural designs, including network topology, components, data flows, and interfaces.
• Collaborate with product management and engineering to gather requirements and ensure alignment.
• Provide technical leadership throughout the system development lifecycle.
• Mentor engineering teams on architectural best practices in a remote setting.
• Stay current with industry trends and best practices in telecommunications.
