Job Description

To produce cost effective and technically sound Piping designs within the required time frame to support project deliverables.

Project Life Cycle
  • Ensure discipline strategy development during set-up to meet project deliverables
  • Offer general project support and problem solving on technical matters arising
  • Use knowledge of scope on current and recent projects to promote re-use of engineering where possible
  • Review key discipline documentation and drawings produced on projects
  • Develop an Electrical strategy and design criteria to suit the unique project/client requirements
  • Produce regular project status reports
  • Generate post-project feedback
Design
  • Generate scope of work specifications with technical requirements for each package
  • Compile technical enquiry packages and technical tender evaluations to ensure accurate placement of technical orders
  • Assist in developing, managing and controlling the discipline cost and man-hour estimates
  • Produce discipline specific designs according to schedule and budget
  • Manage and control changes to budget and schedule
  • Identify potential risks/delays and explain discrepancies
  • Produce piping designs in accordance with piping design codes and specifications
  • Carry out dynamic and static analysis using piping stress analysis software
  • Carry out valve and piping bulk material specifications
  • Generate piping bills of material
  • Generate fabrication, erection and testing specifications
  • Maintain effective engineering input/output of design office
  • Ensure development and optimization of piping layout drawings through the design office
  • Review supplier documentation for compliance with technical requirements
Client Relations (Internal & External)
  • Maintain effective inter-discipline requirements
  • Understand other discipline requirements and communicate requirements
  • Ensure sufficient informal interaction between disciplines
  • Gather feedback from other disciplines for Design purposes
  • Manage and interface with suppliers and contractors to meet project objectives

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Professionally, the successful candidate will be a B.Sc. / B.Eng or B.Tech graduate and will be registered as a professional engineer or technologist.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
  • A proven track record of 5-7 years plus experience in piping engineering design and project management, within a processing or petrochemical plant projects environment, is required for this position.
  • Project Management - Knowledge of basic project management methods and knowledge of all project life cycle phases
  • Design Criteria - Applications and improvements of technical knowledge into design criteria that suit project reqs. and/or support the design of new components/equipment
  • Design Codes - Knowledge of local piping design codes and standards
  • Commercial Principles - Understanding of contract types and of their main features (basics, purchasing and selling conditions, partnerships, claims, logistic aspects etc) including international contracts
  • Technical Documentation - Ability to create, understand and communicate technical specifications
  • Plant Layout development - Ability to layout the plant in a functional, safety, cost-effective way
  • Equipment Fundamentals - Knowledge and understanding of basic information regarding equipment and components used in process plants
  • Materials Fundamentals - Knowledge and understanding of basic information regarding materials and their properties used in engineering and manufacturing activities
  • Materials Knowledge of piping materials, fittings, special piping items and valves
  • Construction & Commissioning - Understanding of on-site construction work such as testing and commissioning of the piping systems
  • Cost Estimation - Understand cost of design (including cost of deliverables generation) and ability to estimate costs related to a project or specific activity
  • Basic IT Tools - Knowledge of the use of Software to generate discipline deliverables.
  • Procurement - Understand of project cost control, budgeting, procurement, purchase-to-pay and supply chain management
  • Engineering Calculations - Knowledge of engineering calculation techniques such as the fundamentals of stress calculations, wall thickness calculations support requirements and material selection
  • Innovation & Adaptability - The ability to adapt to different environments (team, technologies, countries etc.) from a technical point of view, including ability to find out new possible technological solutions according to customer’s needs.
  • Quality Engineering - Knowledge of quality methods, management systems and procedures and/or understanding of quality features of piping materials and fabricated systems
  • CAE Software - Familiarity and ability to use specific CAE software including setting up systems, procedures and guidelines eg Plant 3D
  • Piping Engineering Software - Ability to use engineering and calculation software with particular reference to PUMA5 for material management and development of piping specifications, AFT Fathom for hydraulic calculations and Caesar II for stress calculations
  • Legislation and Standards - Knowledge of sector specific law (eg. Engineering safety reqs, Audit regulations, Insurance laws etc.) and knowledge of standard specifications (eg. Plant layout requirements etc.) including the ability to integrate these standards.
