The Senior Occupational Nurse supervises occupational health services, ensuring compliance with MHSA and company policies. The incumbent will oversee medical surveillance, monitor and refer occupational illnesses, support IOD case management and ensure regulatory reporting. The role also leads wellness initiatives and responds to health emergencies as required.
Minimum Requirements
Grade 12 or equivalent
NQF Level 5
Diploma in General Nursing, HIV and TB Management
NQF Level 6 Post Basic Diploma in Occupational Health
Registered as an Occupational Health Nurse Practitioner with the SANC
Minimum 7 years’ experience in Occupational Health within a mining environment
Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment
Key Competencies
Proven safety leadership capability with established safety campaign delivery record
Accomplished frontline team and people leader with advanced inter and intra-team collaboration
Effective communicator with sound spoken and written English communication skills
Ability to apply initiative, be a self-starter and work independently
Skilled in short- and long-term planning within the Occupational Health processes
Understanding and application of the relevant regulatory frameworks and requirements
Computer proficiency in the application of integrated health management systems and Microsoft Office Suite
Duties And Responsibilities
Ensure the Health and Safety of self and team members by applying relevant standards and procedures in the planning and execution of operational activities
Contribute to the culture of Zero Harm by participating in and contributing to operational safety campaigns, applying relevant legislative, operational and safe work standards and regulations and, instituting and monitoring appropriate remedial actions as required
Actively support the company’s strategies and initiatives to promote a respectful, diverse and inclusive workplace culture
Provide direction and oversight over assigned occupational health services, ensuring alignment and compliance with Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA), policies and legal requirements
Coordinate and collaborate with team, mine departments, health professionals and external medical service providers to ensure comprehensive occupational health support
Oversee and manage medical surveillance programmes, including pre-placement, periodic, and exit medical assessments, ensuring compliance with MHSA regulations
Monitor and identify potential occupational illnesses such as silicosis, noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), tuberculosis (TB), and heat stress-related conditions and refer cases to medical practitioners for further evaluation
Supervise and ensure the accuracy of medical examinations, including spirometry, audiometry, vision screening, and biological monitoring
Enforce occupational health standards and policies in compliance with legal and corporate governance frameworks
Ensure timely reporting and submission of occupational health statistics to regulatory authorities
Coordinate and support the management of injuries on duty (IODs), including first aid, referrals, and return-to-work medical evaluations
Lead and participate in wellness and health promotion initiatives to improve workforce well-being, such as TB, HIV/AIDS, and chronic disease management programmes
Remain prepared for any occupational health emergencies, such as heat-related illness, gas inhalation, and medical evacuations
