Senior Network Engineer job vacancy in Cape Town.
Well established Cape Town based IT ISP/ FNO company is seeking a highly skilled Senior Network Engineer to design, implement, maintain, and troubleshoot the network infrastructure.
The ideal candidate will be responsible for ensuring the reliability, scalability, and security of our networks while mentoring junior engineers and collaborating on strategic initiatives.
This role requires expertise in configuring and managing network devices, designing robust architectures, and optimizing performance for customer satisfaction.
The ideal candidate will also be able to identify any potential issues and recommend solutions to future proof the network.
The position is based fulltime at the office in Cape Town. The individual must have a valid drivers license and own transport.
Relocation to Western Cape will be for the candidate’s own account.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Network Configuration and Maintenance
- Configure, maintain, and troubleshoot routers, switches, firewalls, and access points.
- Ensure optimal performance and reliability of all network devices.
- Network Infrastructure Design
- Design and implement scalable, resilient, and high-performance network architectures.
- Utilize H3C, Huawei,MikroTik and Cisco equipment to meet business needs.
- Network Monitoring and Optimization
- Use monitoring tools to assess network performance, utilization, and security.
- Identify, resolve, and optimize network issues to enhance efficiency.
- Network Security
- Implement and maintain security measures, including firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems, and VPNs.
- Safeguard against cyber threats and unauthorized access.
- Troubleshooting and Issue Resolution
- Diagnose and resolve network incidents promptly to minimize service disruptions.
- Handle service requests related to core network issues.
- Network Documentation
- Maintain up-to-date documentation of configurations, diagrams, and procedures for troubleshooting and planning.
- Project Implementation
- Collaborate on infrastructure projects such as upgrades, migrations, and expansions.
- Ensure timely and budget-compliant project delivery.
- Assist Sales team with customer specific solutions by attending meetings and engaging with end users when required.
- Vendor Coordination
- Liaise with 3rd party vendors (DFA, WIOCC, Liquid, Vumatel) for onboarding and troubleshooting.
- Ensure vendor compliance with SLAs.
- Change Management
- Implement changes following standardized processes and document thoroughly.
- Core Backbone and Failover
- Design and manage failover solutions using protocols like OSPF, BGP, iBGP, STP, and VXLAN.
- PPPOE Server Management
- Configure and monitor PPPOE server pools for customer connection authentication.
- Optimize server performance and capacity.
- Team Leadership
- Mentor junior engineers and foster a collaborative team environment.
- IP Address Management
- Manage IP allocation, subnetting, and assignment using IPAM solutions.
- Routing Protocols Management
- Configure and optimize routing protocols (OSPF, BGP) to enhance traffic flow.
Minimum requirements in order to be considered for the role:
- Matric and Tertiary IT Degree / Diploma or equivalent
- Certifications such as CCNA, CCNP, MTCNA, Huawei (HCIA, HCIP) or equivalent required
- ITIL certification is an advantage.
- Prior experience working in a Networking environment, IT Infrastructure
- Prior experience working in the ISP or FNO Industry
- Valid Drivers license and own car
- Network Monitoring: Iris and Observium
- Proven expertise in configuring and managing Cisco, MikroTik, H3C and Huawei devices.
- Fibre Management: GPON OLT platforms, OTDR trace interpretation, GIS systems
- Ticketing/CRM: Freshdesk,or proprietary systems
- Network Protocols: BGP, OSPF, VLANs, PPPoE, DHCP, DNS, IPv4/IPv6 subnetting
- VoIP/SIP troubleshooting and diagnostics
- Familiarity with network monitoring tools and incident management systems.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to quickly assess and resolve network issues.
- Ability to work independently and efficiently in a fast-paced, 24/7 environment.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with team members and stakeholders.

- Network Uptime: Ensure 99.9% network uptime with minimal unplanned outages.
- Incident Resolution: Resolve 100% of escalated core network issues within SLA timelines.
- Change Control Management: Approve and review 100% of network change requests to ensure proper documentation and implementation.
- Training: Conduct at least 2 training sessions per quarter for Tier 3 NOC staff on advanced troubleshooting and core network operations.
- Oversight : Check teams work, ensuring all protocols and best practices are being followed.
- Escalation Handling: Act as the primary escalation point for complex core network faults requiring advanced troubleshooting for network or customer fualts
- Network Monitoring: Continuously monitor network performance and ensure 100% of devices are properly added, tracked, and managed.
- Customer Onboarding Solutions: Draft comprehensive network solutions for 100% of new customer onboarding requests to meet technical and business requirements.
- Network Capacity Planning: Proactively monitor and plan network capacity to support current and future customer demands, ensuring scalability and performance.
- Documentation Updates: Update 100% of network documentation within 24 hours of changes.
- Project Delivery: Complete 95% of project tasks within agreed timelines and budgets.
