Job summary

Placements24 seeks a Senior Metallurgist for its Durban processing division. The role focuses on optimizing mineral processing operations to maximize recovery and product quality, while troubleshooting complex metallurgical challenges and driving process improvements.

You will work with operations, R&D, and engineering to implement innovative solutions and maintain high performance standards within a hybrid work model balancing on-site presence with remote analysis.

Qualifications

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
7+ years of hands-on mineral processing/metallurgy experience.
Proven expertise in optimizing recovery rates and reducing operational costs.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills including SPC experience.
Familiarity with simulation software and laboratory analytical techniques.
Excellent communication and teamwork abilities for a hybrid work environment.

Responsibilities

Optimize milling, flotation, leaching, and refining circuits for various mineral commodities.
Conduct pilot plant studies and lab testing for new technologies.
Troubleshoot issues, identify root causes, and implement solutions.
Develop and monitor KPIs for process efficiency and product quality.
Provide mentorship to junior metallurgists and plant operators.
Collaborate with engineering on equipment upgrades and process automation.

About the Role

Our client is seeking a highly skilled Senior Metallurgist to join their dynamic processing division in Durban . This critical role involves optimizing mineral processing operations to maximize recovery and product quality. You will be instrumental in troubleshooting complex metallurgical challenges, driving process improvements, and contributing to the overall efficiency and profitability of the plant. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with operations teams, R&D, and engineering to implement innovative solutions and maintain the highest standards of operational performance within a hybrid work model that balances on-site presence with remote analysis.

Key Responsibilities

Optimize milling, flotation, leaching, and refining circuits for various mineral commodities.
Conduct pilot plant studies and laboratory testing to evaluate new processing technologies and reagents.
Troubleshoot operational issues, identify root causes, and implement effective solutions.
Develop and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for process efficiency and product quality.
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior metallurgists and plant operators.
Collaborate with engineering on equipment selection, upgrades, and process automation projects.

Requirements

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline.
At least 7 years of hands-on experience in mineral processing metallurgy.
Proven expertise in optimizing recovery rates and minimizing operational costs.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience in statistical process control (SPC).
Familiarity with various simulation software and laboratory analytical techniques.
Excellent communication and teamwork abilities, suitable for a hybrid work environment.
