Job summary

SGS South Africa, Matrolab Division, is seeking a Senior Materials Tester to support the Supervisor/Laboratory Manager on site or in the commercial laboratory. You will prepare materials for testing—including soils, asphalt, seals, concrete and aggregates—and keep the laboratory clean at all times.

The role involves supervising tests within your competence, reporting deviations, and performing field and laboratory sampling and calculations, with strong English and basic Office software skills.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 / NQF4 or equivalent with relevant experience.
• Proficiency in English (read, write, speak).
• Computer literacy: Word, Excel, Outlook.
• Familiarity with SANS test methods is preferred.
• Experience with sampling and preparation advantageous.
• Ability to perform calculations related to tests.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and/or carry out testing for all tests within competence, per prescribed methods.
• Keep work areas and equipment clean after each task and daily.
• Adhere to quality and safety requirements of SGS management system.
• Orally report deviations, irregularities, and non-conformances.
• Perform other tasks as assigned by site supervisor or manager.
• Carry out field and laboratory work including sampling, calculations, and test methods.
• Complete timesheets accurately on a daily basis.
• Ensure discipline within the assigned department.

Job description

SGS South Africa, Matrolab Division, is seeking to fill a key role in its Civil Engineering Site Laboratories. The role includes assisting the Supervisor/Laboratory Manager with all tasks on site or in the commercial laboratory, cleaning equipment regularly, preparing materials for testing—including soils, asphalt, seals, concrete and aggregate—and ensuring the laboratory is clean at all times. The Senior Materials Tester will perform all work related instructions from technicians, supervisors or authorized personnel.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and/or carry out testing for all tests that the employee is deemed competent for, strictly in accordance with prescribed methods.
• Keep all work areas and equipment clean after each task and at the end of the day.
• Adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
• Orally report any deviations, irregularities, and non-conformances.
• Perform any other reasonable tasks assigned by the authorized site supervisor, laboratory manager, or regional manager.
• Carry out field and laboratory work including sampling, calculations, and performing test methods accurately.
• Complete timesheets accurately on a daily basis.
• Ensure discipline within the assigned department.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 / NQF4 or an additional three years of relevant experience for each year of schooling below grade 12.
• Knowledge, skills, and experience sufficient to be recognized as a qualification through Recognition of Prior Learning.
• Language: Proficiency in English (Read, write, speak).
• Computer literacy in Word, Excel, Outlook.
• Must be competent and comfortable with the SANS and all related test methods.
• Sampling and preparation experience advantageous.
• Administration experience will be advantageous.
• Competent and qualified to perform all tests in all laboratory divisions, including soils, asphalt, seals, concrete, and aggregates.
• Do all calculations fully related to the tests mentioned above.
• Control laboratory activities such as quality control under supervision.
• Physically able and willing to work with, move and pick up samples as and when required.
