SGS South Africa, Matrocast Division, is seeking to fill a key role in its Civil Engineering Sites Laboratories in the Western Cape Region. The role includes assisting the Supervisor/Laboratory Manager with all tasks, both on site and in the laboratory. Responsibilities include equipment cleaning, preparation of materials such as soils, asphalt, seals, concrete, and aggregate for testing, including bench calculations. The Senior Materials Tester will ensure the laboratory remains clean and will execute work instructions from technicians, supervisors, or authorized personnel.

They should possess energy and passion to maintain good staff relationships and have a track record of delivering performance against strategic objectives, ensuring quality and testing methods are followed, and reporting deviations promptly.

Job Responsibilities

• Supervise and/or perform testing for all tests within their competence, strictly following prescribed methods.
• Ensure the site or workshop is cleaned after tasks, removing all consumables used.
• Adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
• Report deviations, irregularities, and non-conformances orally.
• Perform other tasks as assigned by the site supervisor, laboratory manager, or regional manager.
• Conduct field and laboratory work, including sampling, calculations, and testing accurately.
• Complete timesheets daily with accuracy.
• Maintain discipline within the assigned department.

Qualifications

• Grade 12
• Recognition of Prior Learning or equivalent experience and skills.
• Proficiency in English (reading, writing, speaking).
• Computer literacy in Word, Excel, Outlook.
• Competent with SANS and THM 1 test methods.

Additional Information

• Experience in sampling and preparation is advantageous.
• Administrative experience is advantageous.
• Experience with fieldwork such as density testing, sampling, concrete cube handling, DCP, Ring and Ball tests, Sand Patch, on-site viscosity tests, asphalt and bitumen sampling.
• Qualified to perform tests across all laboratory divisions including soils, asphalt, seals, concrete, and aggregate.
• Ability to perform related calculations.
• Ability to oversee laboratory quality control activities.
• Physically capable of handling samples and working in the field.
