Job description

Senior Legal Counsel: Wealth and Retirement

Momentum, based in Centurion, Gauteng, South Africa, is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to join its Legal Team for Wealth and Retirement Funds.

Through brands like Metropolitan and Momentum, and programs such as Multiply, the group provides financial solutions that help individuals and organizations achieve their financial goals.

The successful candidate will be based at the Momentum Group Head Office in Centurion.

Role Purpose: To provide legal advice, product development support, and legal services related to long-term insurance, investments, retirement funds, governance, and general legal matters within the Momentum Investments: Retirement and Wealth (Retail) division and other divisions as necessary.

Requirements:

  • LLB degree
  • CFP qualification or postgraduate qualification in financial planning
  • Admitted attorney (an advantage)
  • 8-10 years of experience in the financial services industry, dealing with long-term insurance, retirement, retail, and related products

Key Responsibilities:

  • Providing legal services and advice across the organization, focusing on retail products and retirement fund governance
  • Monitoring legislative developments and implementing relevant legislation in collaboration with the Compliance Team
  • Assisting with death claims and participating in committees
  • Legal research and providing legal opinions
  • Training and presenting on legal issues and legislation
  • Drafting legal updates, policy documents, and legal opinions
  • Supporting product development in long-term insurance, investments, LISP, and retirement funds
  • Managing legal disputes and liaising with external law firms
  • Drafting pension fund rules and amendments, reviewing related documents
  • Providing tax advice on fund administration queries

Competencies:

  • Deep understanding of relevant financial legislation (e.g., Long-Term Insurance Act, Pension Funds Act, FAIS, FICA)
  • Extensive knowledge of financial products and retirement funds
  • Strong communication skills, independent thinking, and proactive attitude
  • Leadership, responsibility, and professionalism
