The role requires a strong understanding of corporate law, regulatory frameworks, and risk management principles.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Providing general legal advice and legal risk management related to the company's operations and transactions, including updating the Group's Business Risk Registers with the respective Risk Owners on a quarterly basis.
- Legislative compliance management, responsible for implementing compliance frameworks, monitoring compliance, and advising the company on all applicable laws (including POPI and PAIA), regulations, and internal policies.
- Assisting with the formulation and drafting of internal policy documents to ensure compliance with relevant statutory and legal requirements.
- Chairing internal disciplinary appeal hearings.
- Commercial contracting, including drafting, reviewing, and negotiating various legal agreements.
- Managing litigation matters.
- Participating in various projects identified by the department.
- Dispute resolution.
- Stakeholder management, including collaboration with internal stakeholders, external legal counsel, and regulatory bodies.
- Managing the group's IP, including trademarks and other IP-related matters.
- Providing ad hoc company secretarial support as required.
Experience required:
- 5+ years of relevant experience as an in-house legal counsel in a corporate setting and/or reputable law firm.
- Strong knowledge of corporate law principles and compliance.
- In-depth knowledge of relevant South African laws and regulations, including but not limited to the Companies Act, POPI, and PAIA.
Qualifications:
- LLB Degree.
- Admitted attorney with 5+ years post-articles experience.
- A postgraduate certificate/degree in compliance management is advantageous.
