The Nelson Mandela Foundation seeks a Senior Legal Advisor to oversee its legal framework and compliance. This role includes managing intellectual property, drafting contracts, and ensuring effective governance while supporting various stakeholders. Candidates should possess a law degree and relevant legal experience, ideally within the non-profit sector.
The Nelson Mandela Foundation seeks to employ a Senior Legal Advisor to support the organisation's mandate in ensuring that the organisation operates within the legal framework and complies with all relevant regulations, including establishing and maintaining effective corporate governance structures and controls.
Within the context of the above, the role focuses primarily on managing the NMF's IP portfolio, contract drafting and risk management for the organisation.
Key responsibilities of the jobPromotes the Founder's legacy and mandate of the organisation modelled on its core values
Keep abreast with changes in relevant legislation and the regulatory environment, advise on appropriate good governance processes and policies that enhance the regulatory environment of the NMF
Conduct legal research, draft legal opinions, and provide legal advice to the NMF
Provide or facilitate training workshops lead by the department
Assist with the design, implementation and management of contract drafting and contract management to aid the delivery of legal and governance services
Assist with dispute resolution and general litigation
Develop risk management framework to monitor for the NMF
Lead the process of identifying and analyzing potential risks across the NMF, including financial, operational, strategic, compliance, and reputational risks.
Conduct risk assessments and scenario analysis to evaluate the potential impact and likelihood of risks materializing.
Develop risk profiles and risk registers for each department and for the NMF
Liaise with external regulators and advisers such as lawyers and auditors and issue legal instructions as and when required.
Manage the organisation's strategic application of the Founder's and the institution's Intellectual Property.
Manage and monitor the stable of intellectual property trademarks for the institution.
Collaborates with stakeholder organisations on protocols to protect and preserve the NMF's intellectual property stable.
Manage the litigation and disputes relating to trademarks, patents, copyrights and / or unfair competition
Build and maintain relationships with all stakeholders of the organisation
Support the General Counsel as required
Qualifications & experienceBachelor's degree in Law
5 (five) to 7 (seven) years applied legal experience
Knowledge of NPO sector advantageous
Compliance Management qualification and / or experience advantageous
Working conditionsThe role is mainly office-based, with minimal local travel.
