Job description

The Faculty of Natural Sciences hosts nine academic departments, a School of Pharmacy and several world-class research institutes and centres. Based on a foundation of internationally-recognised quality research, the faculty is committed to learning and teaching excellence and offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the major scientific disciplines as well as a professional degree in Pharmacy.

The School of Pharmacy at the University of the Western Cape has a strong focus on patient and service orientated education, building on a sound scientific base and active research. The School intends to appoint an experienced Academic Pharmacists to complement and enhance both teaching and research expertise in Pharmacy Practice. The start date for this position will beJanuary 1, 2026.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key responsibility areas:

  • Facilitate learning and teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Conduct research and postgraduate supervision.
  • Contribute to community engagement and outreach.
  • Manage academic administration.
  • Actively participate in curriculum development and assessment.

Minimum Requirements for the Senior Lecturer:

  • An BPharm and PhD in Pharmacy Practice or closely related field.
  • A record of relevant international accredited publications.
  • Demonstrated competence in teaching and learning in Pharmacy Practice at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Experience in a South African practice setting.
  • Evidence of successful postgraduate research supervision at Masters level.

Minimum Requirements for theLecturer :

  • An BPharm and MSc or MPharm in Pharmacy Practice or closely related field.
  • Demonstrated competence in teaching and learning in Pharmacy Practice at undergraduate level.
  • Experience in a South African practice setting.
  • Record of research or participation in ongoing research.

  • A track record of research projects and securing research funding.
  • Active collaborations and partnerships with a National academic presence in Pharmacy and Pharmacy Practice.
  • Evidence of postgraduate or research supervision.
  • Experience in the following key areas would be beneficial: Forensic pharmacy, pharmacoeconomics, pharmacy and medicine management, social pharmacy and public health.

Key competencies:

  • Verbal and written communication skills in English for teaching, research, and professional engagement.
  • Ability to engage and train students, and provide academic supervision and mentorship at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Proficiency to conduct research and contribute to scholarly publications.
  • Planning and organisational skills with the ability to manage academic, research, and administrative responsibilities efficiently.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
